George Orwell's Propaganda In 'The Book Thief'
The message that Orwell gives to readers is that power can lead to corruption and oppression. It shows the way that a government can brainwash its citizens through propaganda. Napoleon and Snowball used fear and propaganda to keep their place in ruling and this shows that even a revolution that was meant for equality and liberty can still progress into a dictatorial state. People can interpret Animal Farm in many different ways but here is one way of interpreting it. This book was written to reflect the actions of Stalin during WWII, and they were mostly correct with the many times Napoleon deserted his allies for his own welfare. This is what happened with Stalin when he saw a chance to rule the Soviet Union.

If Zusak included a concentration camp scene, Death would only be watching from above and expressing his opinion on what the Jews were forced to do and what was happening to them. When Max was in hiding before he went to the Hubermann’s it wasn’t very enjoyable. He was in a dark cell with no food or water for a few weeks with only his suitcase to keep himself company. A person came and gave him some food, toiletries, a map, a key, and a train ticket to Germany. When Max was hiding in the Hubermann’s house he first stayed in Liesel’s room because he was sleeping. Eventually when he woke up, he stayed in the basement. One of the events that probably made him think about leaving was when the Nazis searched the Hubermann’s basement to see if it was a good bomb shelter. Max had to be hidden so he wouldn’t get caught because he was hiding in the basement. If the Hubermann’s were caught hiding Max, they would have been severely punished and Max would have thought it was his …show more content…
The SS kept making them increase their pace until it looked like they were running away from them. They had orders to shoot anyone who could not maintain the pace and did not deprive themselves of the amusement. Elie’s father being next to him was the only thing that made him want to live. Sometimes Elie would close his eyes while he was running so it could be like he was running while being asleep. After the Kommandant notified them they had gone twenty kilometers, they stopped at an abandoned village. For three days they stayed in Gleiwitz. On the third day they were driven out of the barrack and taken outside. They were forced to stand outside for many hours and were not allowed to bend down or sit so they had to survive on mouthfuls of snow and bread. Hitler drives the plot of the Book Thief because many of the things the characters did were under his orders. If Hitler wasn’t mentioned in this story, it would be very different because there wouldn’t be a reason for most events in this book to happen. For example, Max had to go into hiding because Hitler was looking for Jews to put in concentration camps. Also, Death wouldn’t be as prominent in this story because without Hitler driving the plot of the story, there wouldn’t be as many deaths. The Book Thief, Animal, Farm, and Night all have connections, but are only obvious when you are really looking for

The reader gets a feeling of frustration too, particularly with that of Squealer.     The concentration camps were meant to detain and confine the Jewish population, usually under harsh conditions, with the main goal of eliminating their culture (Holocaust Encyclopedia). Zusak first presented the concentration camps in the novel when he had them marching through the streets of Molching; having death narrated “I have no idea where the convey had traveled from, but it was perhaps four miles from Molching, and many steps more to the concentration camps at Dachau” (Zusak). Liesel, Rudy and Hans were all present during this long walk to Dachau, observing as they watched the brutalised Jews walk down the street. During this time Hans goes to one of the Jews that have fallen and hands him a slice of stale bread; a Nazi who witness’ the act, whips them both. The Jew moved on leaving the bread, as Rudy and Liesel help Hans up (Zusak). A scene further on in, The Book Thief, where a similar situation occurs. A group of Jewish people are walking to Dachau once again outside of Molching, although this time a young teenage girl is walking with them. Liesel is observing each and every face hoping to see Max’s, and then she spots him, because he is the only other one searing the faces of the Germans. She goes amongst the Jews calling his name until she is close enough to take his hand in hers. Max tells her to stop holding on before they are seen, but she is much too strong for him, a soldier sees them and throws her to the ground, she gets up and quotes a passage from the word shaker, she approaches him and touches his face, the soldier comes with the whip and hits Max with it in the face. Afterwards, they had to evacuate their homes because they were being deported.     As a satire and allegory of Russian Revolution, Animal Farm helps us determine and reflect all the different lessons learnt in different parts of the book. The lessons that I could pick out were politics, corruption due to power/absolute power, equality- more equal when the system is corrupted, propaganda used for convincing and also when someone receives absolute power, it is not going to the good of the people but to oneself only. These were several “lessons” I thought Orwell was trying to convey in Animal Farm. The first lesson gives us a detailed idea that when absolute power is given to one only then that power is not used for the public’s good but for oneself only. This is normally to give oneself luxury and strength over others. It relates to when Napoleon gains the authority over the farm after driving Snowball out and only looks out for his own benefits. Another example is when the Squealer is convincing the animals that pigs have to eat apples and drink milk is for everyone’s good, because it’s scientifically proven that it contains substances absolute necessary for the well-being of a pig. So in this case the pigs/Napoleon are misusing the power they are given to make sure they have all their desired substance and are treated and fed like Kings. This lesson is important because its true when a person gains too much power, it’s first used to make sure he is happy and satisfied. His desire can never stop, which would be harmful for the people that are in his way in order to get what he wants. For example when Napoleon took away those dogs from Jessie and Bluebell, it could have been for the sake of protection from humans but instead those dogs were trained and used to help out Napoleon get his way. While on the other side Squealer on was one of Napoleon’s treasured tools to get animals to believe that he is right and to obey his orders.
