Body 1: George Orwells purpose to write this novel was to sound the alarm in Western nations still unsure about how to approach the rise of communism. 1948 was the time of communist Russia and George Orwell was free-thinking socialist, so the idea of communism didn’t agree with him. 1) The moral of the novel is that Big Brother ( Communism) will bring the end to subjectivity. Thesis: 1984 is a fundamentally pessimistic novel, however the characters are either optimistic or to the liking of Big Brother, neither.
Paragraph2 : There is nothing but pessamism in the fact that Big Brother uses tools to control his people. 1) Psychological manipulation
2) Physical control
3) Control of information and history
Paragraph 3: Winston is the only character who is optomistic 1) Symbols
Paragraph 4: The other characters show neither optimism or pessimism. 1) Julia
Conclusion: Without subjectivity, there is no optimism or pessimism. So the civilians who are too scared or brainwashed to rebel against Big Brother, are the people with no subjectivity. Winston had it but at the end of the novel he lost his subjectivity.
Psychological manipulation: The party crams ints people with psychological stimuli in order to overwhelm the minds capacity for independent thought. The telescreen in eveyones room is always on and promoting propaganda from Big Brother, always making Big Brother seem Godly and right at all times. The telescreens also monitor the civilians and constantly remind them that “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU” The party has also turned the children into “junior spies” who monitor their parents for thought crime. The civilians are repressed from sexual activity making them sexually frustrated in turn using this hate agaisnt Big Brother’s political enemies. This is how communism works and all this control seems to be a sign of pessimism. In addition to psychological control, the party uses physical control on its civilians.
Physical control: The party forces its members to have mass morning excercises called the “physical jerks” which is a symbol for Big Brother being a physical jerk. After this everyone works long days at Government agencies keeping the people exhausted at all times. Any one who defies the party is subjected to torture and even death. Winston learned that physical pain is worse that anything else and proved this when he turned on Julia and forced him to agree that 2+2=5. This being a tactic of communism to make the civilians believe whatever they where told, even if it was wrong.
Control of information and history: The party controls and edits every source of information, rewriting newspapers and history. The party allows no civilian to keep documents or pictures in order to keep the civilians minds fuzzy and more cooperative with Big Brother. By controlling the present, the party is able to manipulate the past, and in controlling the past, the party can justify its actions in the future. A brutal tactic to keep people from being pesimistic about the past or optimistic about the future. Without knowledge of the past, how can one worry or care for the future?
Language: Orwell proposes that if an agency controls language, that agency could make it impossible to even conceive of rebellious thoughts, because there would be no words to think rebellion. This tactic is used in the language of “Newspeak” which the party has introduced to replace english. The idea of Newspeak is to eliminate all unnecessary words ( or words that Big Brother disliked) so that no civilian could commit “though crime”(thoughts that where againsnt party law). Language is history and culture and if you take that away people will have to follow a new language and culture.
Big Brother: Big Brother is the leader of the nation and head of the party and we are never...
