“The Closer” is an autobiography by Mariano Rivera. Mariano was born on November 29, 1969 in Panama City. He pitched for the New York Yankees from 1995 to 2013 and is seen by many baseball fans as the greatest closing pitcher to ever play the game. Mariano totaled 652 career saves, which is a record in Major League Baseball (MLB). A save in baseball is when a pitcher enters the game with their team in the lead and finishes the game without ever losing the lead. Mariano’s autobiography uses many course themes discussed in class, such as social philosophy, cultural diffusion, religious influences, militarism, social class, and what it is like to be an international professional athlete.…

Few events in the state of Texas are as prestigious as the annual Texas Tech University Commencement. Last December, I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the speakers for at the Bachelor’s ceremony. Knowing that on that day, I would be looked upon by hundreds of young and hard-working students, I pondered what message I would give them.…

My first full stride throws feel good. It’s not just our first game of the season today- it’s THE first game of the season for the 15-16 Babe Ruth leagues. The mound is smooth and the dirt is still the reddish color of fresh clay. Later in the year it will be a rutted, sand-covered mockery of what the rulebook describes. For today though, for this first day’s contests, it’s perfect- and it’s mine. The smooth, even slope and bright white rubber bear no marks or scuffs, save what I’ve made. It’s brand spanking new, and it’s here just for me- just for today.…

Fister will take the mound tonight for his 12th start of the season, and will try to grab his second win in a row and his sixth of the season overall. Fister is a 6-foot-8 giant that can put ‘em away with consistency. He boasts a 5-3 record this season with a 3.51 ERA in 66.2 innings, and he’s got to be looking for a little redemption here after losing to the Rangers back in April. He allowed just two runs in six innings, but still wasn’t able to get…

It's 8 to 7 bases loaded with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, If we win this game we go to the championship, what we have all have been waiting for. As the sweat pours down my face in the 90 degree heat I know Sam can do it. If he gets on base it is all up to me. Sam goes up to bat. He is one of our best players. I hear strike 1, strike 2, ball, ball, and then he hits one right over the 1st baseman's head. Sam has hit Mason home there are 2 outs and the score is 8 to 8. All we have to do is score one more time. What happens next is all on my shoulders. I will either be the reason we win or the reason we go into extra innings. The pressure is on.…

When trying to build a strong organizational culture, planning and recruitment are two major aspects to building this culture successfully. Not only is this important to business organizations, but it is also important in collegiate sports. The Florida State Seminoles have had recent success in college basketball, and I decided to look into the profiles of some of the team’s top recruits under coach Hamilton. After closely studying the rosters of recent Florida State basketball teams, it is evident that Hamilton heavily recruits players at key positions who are great athletes and intense defenders.…

Wake Forest has all of the “checklist qualities” I am looking for—a small college with major academic and research prowess. With the benefits of an intimate campus and all the opportunities of a larger school, Wake landed on my list with numerous comparable colleges. As I interviewed with Mr. Tillett, Wake began to stand out from the rest. Our interview would be more properly deemed a conversation, it was dynamic and we discussed everything from Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to Chelsea FC. Our meeting wasn’t about analyzing me, but learning about me. At Wake Forest, I know that I will have a close-knit community where Pro Humanitate isn’t a motto but part of regular life. Such vested interest and investment in each other is something I found…
