The story of Adam and Eve is one of the most culturally important and known stories in the Bible regarding the origin of mankind. It’s generally followed by Judeo-Christians but is also grasped by other religious views, though many tend to overlook minor key details that may alter the whole interpretation. First, God created a man named Adam to primarily tend to the garden he planted in Eden. There were many trees in the garden that happened to contain two special types of trees. God allowed Adam to eat from any tree he wished, except from one specific tree. Then, God created a woman to accompany Adam who automatically became his wife. The woman came across a serpent she claimed to have deceived her. In actuality, the serpent simply told her a fact that is later proven correct with the help of her temptation. After Adam and the woman both consumed fruit from the forbidden tree, they realized that they were naked and tried to hide from God. God came to find that Adam and the woman ate from the forbidden tree because they suddenly were full of knowledge. God punished the serpent, Adam, and the woman for their disobedience. He then banished them not as another punishment but to help them avoid temptation again. Within the controversial context of the story lie theoretical themes that can be analyzed by existentialism and the Post-Freudian psychoanalytic theory of eros, thanatos, and the Oedipal Conflict. The story can be viewed using the Oedipal Conflict as God plays the role of both the mother and father figure while Adam and Eve play the role of the rebellious children. Along with this conflict, the characters of the story demonstrate existentialism qualities and carry out actions that they are either eros or thanatos.…

In the beginning of Genesis God created the heavens and earth. He saw it was good, so he decided to create a man out of the dirt He had created. Doing so he breathed life into the first man made in His image. So Adam did not have anyone that was close to him to relate to. Next God took a rib from the man, closed the open place (where the rib was taken from), created a helpmate for man. God called her woman her name was Eve (Genesis 3:6). They were not to eat of one tree in the middle of the garden. Then along comes Satan disguised as a serpent to tempt Eve, to commit sin against God. (Merrill, p.,57)…

In Genesis 12, God comes to Abram and tells him: “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” At this moment, God makes several promises to Abram. Those who bless him would be blessed, and those who curse him, shall be cursed. Abram, without a sign of hesitation, leaves as God has commanded. Along with him, he brings his wife, nephew, their possessions, and their people from Haran. One of the most well known theories is the flood story that appears in the Bible. In this story, God was upset at mankind and wanted to rid the world of their evil through a massive worldwide flood. He enlisted Noah, a righteous man of God to assist to save animals and man from extinction by instructing him to build a big boat called an arc. The arc was designed to house two, a male and female of all animals and Noah's family so that when the flood waters would dissipate, these species could repopulate the earth. According to the story, it rained for 40 days and 40 nights and the earth remained flooded for 150 days. (Flood…

    Abraham and Sarah

The story of Abraham and Sarah is an important one, especially because Abraham is the father (and Sarah the mother) of the Israelite nation. When looked at from a broad point of view, this story of an ancient family and their relationship with God becomes a parable which teaches others to put their trust in God and provides examples of how to live a righteous life in the eyes of this God. When looked at from a narrower point of view, one can examine the motivations and personalities of the individuals this story focuses on. Abraham is born blessed because he is the ancestor of Shem and Sarah shares in this blessing because she is his wife. However, Abraham receives an even greater blessing from God, after the death of his father, when he is promised not only a blessed life, but also a multitude of descendents who will share in his blessing and come to make up God’s chosen people. Though Abraham and Sarah express a deep faith in their God, they show difficulties in trusting his words, but this lack of trust allows for their relationship with God to be developed through acts by both parties. God intervenes on their behalf, constantly affirming his covenant with Abraham, and Abraham and Sarah consistently act in ways which prove their righteousness and that they are deserving of this great blessing. The development of Abraham and Sarah, through the story of their lives, not only demonstrates the power and emotions of God and the maturation of their relationship with God, but also the maturation of themselves and their faith in God.…
