SPSS Assignment: Describing Data
Provide an answer for each of these questions in a sentence format. These should be clear and parsimonious responses that correctly express the statistic in APA-format. Be careful of how the questions are asked and if interpretation of the result is necessary. Also, pay close attention to how the variables are scaled so that you are sure you get a valid answer.
1. Find the mean, standard deviation, and median for any variable of interest.
2. Find the mode for any variable. Is this surprising? Why or why not?
3. Identify at least one outlier in our data set or determine that there are none? In either case, explain how you came to your decision.
4. Find a cumulative frequency for any valid variable. …show more content…
Find a percentile (excluding 0% and 100%) for any valid variable.
6. Describe the graphic distribution of any variable and determine if it is:
a. symmetrical or skewed (positive or negative?)
b. uni-modal or multi-modal?
7. Find the mean for any variable. Then find that mean for two separate groups of people in the sample for the same variable. Describe the difference and interpret the finding.
8. Compute any new variable that makes conceptual sense. Indicate the name of new variable, how you are justifying it as a reasonable variable, and the variables you used to compute. Make a comment on something you find interesting in the newly created variable.
9. Recode a variable into something new that makes conceptual sense. Indicate the name of the new variable, how you are justifying it as a reasonable variable, the old values you used, and new values computed. Make a comment on something you find interesting related to that new variable.
10. Impress me by using SPSS to run an inferential statistic you remember from your previous Statistics course. Explain the result. Help each other!
