General Motors and the Chrysler Group
HRM-587: Managing Organization Change Project Proposal

Overview of Organizations

September 7, 2015

I will be doing my course project on General Motors and the Chrysler Group. I have decided to use these companies to discuss the changes that each company endured during the most recent credit-driven recession. The automobile industry was one of the most effected sectors during that recession. Chrysler and General Motors were pushed into bankruptcy and 276,000 jobs in the automobile and parts industry were destroyed. That equates to a whopping 36 percent of the total employment in the sector (CHU. T.H. & YINGZI, 2010).
General Motors Company designs, manufactures, and markets cars, crossovers, trucks, and automobile parts worldwide (General Motors). The company markets its vehicles primarily under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brand names. (General Motors ). Chrysler Group LLC, designs, engineers, manufactures, distributes and sells vehicles under the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and FIAT brands, and the SRT performance vehicle designation (Chrysler Holding LLC.).
Changes in recent years
Both companies in the last 25 years have undergone major facelifts ranging from filing bankruptcy, implementing new leaderships and names changes (Miel, 2014). In the beginning, there was Chrysler Corp, and then in 1998 Chrysler begat DaimlerChrysler which in 2009 became Chrysler Group. General Motors suffered the same fate and obstacles having to change their name from GM Corp. to today 's GM Co. (Miel, 2014).
Although these conglomerates were faced with many challenges during that entire stretch of time from Chrysler Corp. to Fiat Chrysler and from General Motors to GM Co. you could still buy a vehicle of your choice made at the same plant, mostly by the same workers, designed to do the same job of transporting families from soccer games to school and home again (Miel, 2014).

Contrary to today, Plymouth had a good edge in the car game, compelling even the best NASCAR drivers with Ford to switch to a Hemi engine. Kenny and the Watsons even drove one, although the car was a 1948 model, for upwards of 20 years (Curtis, 6). Likewise, Chrysler today does still have a good reputation, but Plymouth is excluded and they are now a division of General Motors, merged with Fiat. Popular and powerful, Chrysler-Fiat makes the Dodge Charger, Ram 1500, and Fiat 500 cars, just to name a…

Chrysler was founded in 1925 and it has had a joyous history. Being the third-largest of Detroit’s auto companies it was especially known for its development in well-engineered cars the years after World War II. As of the last three decades it has been experiencing both highs and lows. The unlikely union of Chrysler and Fiat to me seemed to be a bigger mistake than that of the Chrysler and Benz merger (" daimler, chrysler," 2008). Fiat took control of Chrysler after it emerged from its government-sponsored bankruptcy in 2009 (VLASIC, 2012).…
