As you read in the WR last week, writers cite borrowed information by providing a signal phrase, page number if a printed source, url in case of a picture taken from the web, etc. One exception to this rule, however, is whenever the information is common knowledge. Common knowledge is a term applicable to any piece of information that is widely available in basic sources about the subject. With living costs as high as they are in this day and age, it is completely unreasonable to expect the average individual to squander already limited resources. For some, they find this to be an enjoyable adventure, broadening their knowledge and learning about new aspects of life, but for others this is just burdensome. However it is looked upon, the college curriculum still requires a diverse selection of courses to develop well rounded, responsible individuals, but in turn creates added pressure upon students.…

This is another edition in a series of “Themes in Education” booklets produced by the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University. The topics addressed by these booklets are generated in response to requests for information from practitioners, parents, and other members of the public. Each booklet aims to present a balanced view of its topic and a glimpse of how the approach works in schools. Some discussions may lend themselves to a state-by-state summary; others are illustrated by a series of vignettes that demonstrate the central concepts. For topics that are more global in nature, the booklet will cite a few illustrations within the region or nationally. The goal…
