“Things happen”, are two words Gene Dulski had to say about how he ended up doing the job he is still doing today. You never know what you are going to end up doing with your life until it is actually time to decide on what path to take. Gene never thought that he would end up being a Millwright. He had bigger and better dreams. But he chose the paths that he took and because of his decisions, he met friends that would last a lifetime, the love of his life, and eventually had a family of his own. Everything happens for a reason, but you decide what paths to take.
Gene Dulski grew up in a middle class family where he was the oldest of three kids. He was the leader, the person they looked up to. During highschool, Gene worked with two of his very best friends, TC and Pauly D, at Jewel Osco. But after high school they all continued with their jobs, so going to college and having a job was a difficult balance. Because of his job, Gene ended up going to a two year Junior College. The transition from high school to Junior College wasn't difficult because he

It is difficult to make the transition from being constantly dependant on your parents to trying to be independant. This is the time where you find yourself and you get into your own routine on how you want to do everything. Gene now has a decent job as a millwright which is someone who builds and maintains machinery. Gene knows that he made mistakes in college. He regrets not caring so much about school but does not wish to change anything. If he would have been a better student, Gene would be in Florida or California studying some kind of new species of fish. Without making the choices he made, he would not have kept his friends around forever, and they would have never introduced him to his wife to be. Yes, everything is your decision and you decide what the outcome will be, but your decisions also affect your

One rainy afternoon, mid-November, when Simon’s father had asked to speak to him. Simon’s father, John Thomas, was very strict and concerned with the path his son should follow after high school. Simon’s father was among many who were concerned about the decision he had made. There were about two months until the deadline for applying to universities and colleges and Simon had an idea of where he wanted to go. Simon’s father asked him “So have you decided what you want you’re going to do?” Simon nervously nodded his head. “I want to apply for medical school to become a nurse.” His father gave a hysterical laugh, almost as if he was offended. “Is this is a joke? Seriously you must have mistaken yourself for something else.” The room had gone silent. Simon knew that his father wanted to tell him that there are many better paths he could have chosen. After five minutes Simon had stood up, firmly he said, “This is what I want to do with the rest of my life, I want to do something where I can help people.” Simon had faintly walked back upstairs to his room and had not spoken to his father for the rest of the…

For me Dan Lewis's view of "life being a smorgasbord" does apply. Life's is like a food buffet with many experiences, some you may like and some you may not but that's okay because you will try them all anyway. When you look at your life you should think of where you are now, where your going and your accomplishments. An example of my life beiong a smorgasbord is when my 7-year-old twin brothers were born. They had been through multiple heart surgeries, many months in Dayton Childrens and still to this day are fully functioning. They were born with chagre syndrom. You go to bed on eday thinking everything is okay, your life is on track and it'll all be thge same tommorrow, the next day and the day after that, but then you wake up and youre…

The most complicated aspect of going through a horrible childhood is the dream to change. Bobbie Ann Mason in her article “Being Country,” explains this experience. While the author’s mother and grandmother were working on drying apples and shelling beans, the author took a look and made the decision that she did not want to shell beans or dry apples for the rest of her life: “drying apple was not in my dreams” (Mason 4). At this moment and after, the author changes the legacy of her ancestors, which was women’s duties. The author’s dream suggests that she wanted to change and be a successful person later in life, but her family could not afford her dream and she was going to be a farmer for the rest of her life. The author mentions another idea that she wanted to change and do something else with her life: “I wanted to be somebody, maybe an airline stewardess” (Mason 4). Mason was desperately dreaming about a better future for her life, and she also had a plan to what she wanted to grow up, which is an airline stewardess, but again her state of living was pulling her back down to reality.…

Life is uncertain since one’s plans for the future are always subject to change. Although people’s plans may not go as expected, they can still persevere and even find something better than they hoped. Iliana Roman exemplifies this principle. In her memoir, “First Job,” Roman illustrates how, although her life deviated from the course she originally planned, she learned from her experiences to reach a status that she never dreamed of.…

When we are little we have high hopes that we can be ANYTHING. Some kids dream to be astronauts or scientist. But as we grow older we come to the realization that those aspirations may not be as possible, given our situations, as we once thought. After we have come to the conclusion that we can’t just be anything, we decide that we need to be something. Lorrie Moore displays this in her short story ‘How to Become a Writer’.…

Sometimes people are unable to control the direction their lives take. This can be a hard concept to grasp, but one needs to understand that one cannot control every single detail or event in one’s life, and also cannot possibly predict what will happen in the future. Obstacles of every kind will strike, whether these trials come in the form of day to day hardships, catastrophic natural disasters, or even the fate of the gods. The only thing one can really do is adapt to the new situation and try to move forward.…

Childhood is a phase in life in which people develop at a much faster rate. In Rohinton Mistry’s short story “Of White Hairs and Cricket” and in Anita Desai’s short story “Games at Twilight,” the protagonists both experience childhood differently, but they arrive at the same conclusion about their insignificance. Both narrators talk about how making independent choices can be both harmful and protective, but maintaining strong family relationships is crucial. Though the narrator in “Games at Twilight” is younger than the narrator in “Of White Hairs and Cricket”, they both face similar situations because of their misunderstanding of the consequences that will follow their decisions. Throughout the short stories, the authors convey that children…

I have been seeking a college degree since I left high school in 2002. It has been a long road for me since there were some obstacles and challenges that hindered me from finishing college in a timely manner. When I first entered college I wasn’t really ready, therefore I skipped classes here and there and eventually stopped going all together; a part of me wished that I would have taken a small break after high school before starting college since I barely passed my senior year of school. I was just not ready to start going back to school again, but I did to please my parents, that’s the first and biggest mistake I have made since I first started college.…

This question I encountered the most difficulty with, I have always believed in the idea that everything happens for a reason. However, in one occurrence I struggled for quite some time to see the blessing the situation had to offer me. As I finished my sophomore year in high school, my family’s financial struggle became more evident in that my single mother would not be able to send me away to college. We made the decision that I would graduate early to be able to work full-time, ultimately so I could save up for college. As the time came when all of my peers went away for college and I stayed home, I couldn’t grasp why this had to happen to me. As the months had passed, it became apparent that there was nothing I could do about the situation.…

First of all, the statement “all of us make choices that set the course of our lives,” applies to the choice that the mother made early in her life to quit school because she didn’t have nice clothes. However, she knew she was a smart cookie then. She knew two languages and could sing an opera with “velvety lungs powerful as morning glories”. Also, she knew how to fix a TV, and how to draw with a needle and thread. With these skills, the mother could have chosen a productive career.…
