Gender Stereotypes: Video Analysis
Chloe midwinter
Doctor who and gender representations
The video is a clip of doctor who aimed at a wide age range audience. It has a range of different ages and characters both male and female, however both genders tend to be portrayed in a different way.
The clip presents many general gender stereotypes and includes some which differ against what the audience are expecting. For example within the sound aspect of the clip the female protagonist who has been capture by the doctors nemesis has a soft playing sound whenever she comes into shot to match her soft feminine voice. In contrast to this the nemesis enforces his power and speaks vociferously and clearly, we can hear him say ‘I’ve got her exactly where I want her’ as if she were

However as we progress more into the clip and hear of Martha’s plan the music becomes more powerful in parallel to her voice which becomes more confidant in addition to this going against traditional female expectations. The doctor uses sound to emphasise his power also as he grows into a stronger human being s does the music; it gets louder and more powerful.
Near the beginning of the clip the camera pans across the side of the room to show the female hostages being held by large men with guns this stereotype shows how the females are being kept as slaves of the master who has the highest level of dominance as if they were just to serve him. The camera shots of the clip show Martha and the master both in a position of power but at different times, in the beginning the camera is placed behind Martha kneeled position as too look up at the master, he is the focus of the scene whilst Martha is on the right hand side of the frame as if she was of less

As well as the guards being only male they are the characters that have guns and the only other character who has a weapon is the Master. The weapons in the scene enforce power and establish which side is in control. It is only the male characters in the scene that have weapons this follows the gender stereotype that they are stronger and the dominant gender the masters dominance is also clearly conveyed .The master is dressed in a formal black (which typically has the connotations of being evil and dark) and white suit as if he was of high importance .His female assistant in spite of this is dressed seductively in a long red dress and pretty face as if she where an object the masters ‘trophy’ wife. Martha is contradictory to this example however going against the typical gender stereotype and dressing herself in army uniform demonstrating a strong independent female who can battle for herself. Each scene of the clip shows a power object of the masters including the large ship they are currently on; the cut away shots show the orbs and missile shots which the master also controls. The massive objects of destruction show a gender stereotype due to the fact that rather than his female assistant the master himself does all the heavy duty work and

    Virgin Luxuries Analysis

Two relationships of power are depicted in the painting entitled “Virgin Luxuries”: sexual power and physical power. In the first panel of the painting, a well dressed white man embraces a female African-American woman, presumably a slave. The way in which enslaved woman gazes admiringly - somewhat praisingly - into the white man’s eyes and the way in which she submissively entwines herself around him illustrates the white man’s sexual power over the black woman. In a parallel scene, a white slave owner is shown aggressively beating his slave with a cane. The white man’s expression is vivid and his stance is open and menacing. By contrast, the black man is virtually faceless, positioned with his back to the audience, and his hands held upwards in fear. These elements combined epitomizes the physical power that the white man possessed over the black slave.…

In this video, I learned that the white Americans who were colonizing America saw the Indians differently from themselves. They stereotyped all Indians as savage and uncivilized things. They used these stereotypes because they were unfamiliar with Indian culture. The Europeans were afraid of tthe Indians and as a result of their Ignorance, they tried to kill them off, assimilatet them, and move them off the land. Since they viewed them as unequals due to their skin tone, it was justification for all the wrong ways the Europeans treated the…

Within the worlds of “Blacksad” and “Watchmen” women are portrayed in a stereotypical way. They are not seen at the same scale as the men within their respective universes; instead, they are seen as symbols of sex. And through being viewed as sex symbols, the women gain their power. Although the women from their respective universes differ with how this power is used. Some use their sexuality to their advantage to try and gain something from those around them, while some are given this power of sexuality and it is used against them, creating negative biases or people misinterpreting their sexaulity, or it just does not work in their favor. “Blacksad” reveals how the power of sexuality works to benefit the women; while “Watchmen” uses the power…

For the most part, stereotypical gender roles exist because society chooses to accept them, but it is easy to say that the media is a profoundly influential source to the problem. We constantly see gender stereotypes in film and television, where the man is portrayed to be the strong, dominant character; he is the breadwinner and the hero, while the woman is a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued. This type of representation of women is quite the opposite in film noir. The classic femme fatale of film noir is a strong and confident woman who disrupts traditional family values; she refuses to play the typical role that society prescribes. Instead, the femme fatale uses her beauty to manipulate men in order to achieve power and independence.…

The first scene that I am going to be studying the issues of representation in is the middle chapter (Chapter 6) from the film entitled: “Too Much Madness.” In this scene, Moses and the rest of his and Sam are in Tina’s flat. In this scene when the “monsters” attack, the males take charge, however when one of the gang dies, and Moses is stuck, the females take charge and kill both of the aliens. This shows that while the males think they are dominant and can protect everyone else, they are in fact equal to the females. I think this is Joe Cornish trying to address a traditional view of males being the dominant gender, and this scene clearly shows that woman are just as strong, maybe even stronger than the males. Ethnicity is a not a key feature of this scene, however class is. Sam is the only middle class person in the room, and she is the only one that isn’t sat on the sofas with everyone else. This portrays her as an outcast because of her social class. Similarly age alienates Sam, she is in her early twenties, and however everyone else in the room is in their mid-teens. This age gap means that the rest of the people in the room don’t respect her, because she is a non- authoritative figure. Her age is made fun of by one of the girls, who says: “Moses, when did you start dating your maths teacher?” This portrays yet another stereotypical view: younger generations do not respect their elders. This is further supported when Sam tries to take charge and speaks up, but she is put down again when the girls just laugh at her. The camera angle is very low when Sam stands up and speaks, so this gives Sam a feeling of insecurity and nervousness, like she is not looked highly upon. However when the leader of the…

The lack of respect for women is apparent is the treatment of the soldiers maid, Michaela. Although they would probably live in squalor without her and she does important things around the house, she is described as homely and unattractive, and the only notable thing for them is that she allows all of them to sleep with her. There are undertones of the men respecting her less because she…

Women are made victims in this documentary. An example is when the documentary shows the statistics of how many girls have eating disorders. Also when the documentary talks about how women make 77 cents to every man’s dollar. The video talks about how depression in young girls and women is rising due to the media. Men are not made to be villains. I say they are not made to be villains because they do not ever blame men for creating the image of women. It is media to blame and men conform to what the media is showing them. There was a high school boy who said that there was more to a girl than her body. It was said that turning a human being into a thing is the first step to justifying violence against a person which are what some images in the media portray. People…

The female's oversized severed legs are positioned right over the woman in the ball gown, as if straddling her, and the machine part links the money at the pubic region with the head of the gymnast. In this montage Hoch purposely ripped images out of context , and roughly joined them together with other images. Her method connotes a violence that is underlined by the "resemblance of a large bow-like machine part to a saw and the severing of the female legs from the body." ( Levin p6) This image is said to produce anger in those who view it because of the violent juxtaposition of metal and flesh, in combination with the " commodity status of the disembodied signs of femininity." ( Noun p26) Through content and form Hoch manages to show montage in a new light, one that produces anger in the viewer. The image owns a disorientating variety in perspective, the disjunctive variations in scale, the interruptions of contours,…

While her clothes doesn't leave much to the imagination either she wears a orange fighter top which exoposes the entire bottom of her chest an extremely short orange skirt black tights and is usually barefooted. This character portrays as emotional and dumb but the creator still gave her a high ranking job as if that cancels the problem out. There seems to be a theme with giving over sexulized chacters really important jobs because yes they all are good fighters but they don't seem to have a body type that shows that. There is one more character that fits this theme perfectly her name is Litchi Faye Ling an asian doctor who also is just an smart person who looks like a sex symbol he wears She also wears an unbuttoned red vest that shows her black bra and breasts with separate black sleeves, a long red skirt, and red shoes which are in a Chinese sort of style with that ya on top of just showing off ms. ling’s body as much as possible along with also sexulaizing the chinese outfit but that’s about another essay. This character seems to have two extremes seen in the game as the perfect women kind hearted and intelligent but she is also being a heavy drinker. So I think these three characters show off the theme I am getting across that females are being betrayed poorly showing females that they have to be extremely attractive and successful which in the real world can be difficult or impossible to be both and because of how the creator designed these characters they and both helping worst media views look better and the views people should looking at to be more obscured and…
