In todays society we have been geared towards equality, however, we still face dividing lines between gender and its sociological images. This includes gender stereotyping, gender socialization, and gender inequality. According to the web gender stereotypes are simplistic generalizations about the gender attributes, differences, and roles of individuals and or groups. Stereotypes can be positive or negative, but they rarely communicate accurate information about others. On the other hand, gender socialization is simply the socialization of children into gender roles. This happens through manipulation. For example, parents sending a girl to dancing class and a boy to a football club, or parents giving their children toys that are seen appropriate for their gender such as dolls for girls and army soldiers for boys. The online google dictionary defines gender inequality, as it refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. It arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles as well as biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences. The mall shows examples of these three acts of gender through advertisements, pricing of items, customers, sales persons, and products.
At the lakewood mall gender inequality was shown through products, such as the store Zumies. Zumies held a larger amount of clothing/ outer wear and shoes for males than females. Another example of gender inequality was through advertisement. This was seen at Macy’s through a Gucci ad, where a woman was posing on the ground while a man was standing strongly over her. When a person is standing above someone it shows superiority, as this advertisement gives off. This shows that in our society the men has the upper hand and is supposedly the gender that holds more power.
