Geauga County Style Industries: A Case Study
The Giggles 'n Stitches Club recently attended the Geauga County Style Revue, held at NDCL School on July 19th. Members had to go through interview judging in the morning and a fashion show in the evening. They were judged on the quality of their project, skill at modeling, and on their ability to make a complete outfit centered around their garment or accessories. Both of the scores they recieved for each were combined and then state qualifiers were picked to represent Geauga Country.

While everyone worked hard on their projects, some were awarded for something that set the project apart. Maggie Eibler (Sewing for others) was awarded State Fair Qualifier and Outstanding of the Day. In the Shopping Savvy, Graycen Wood was given State Fair Qualifier and Outstanding of the Day, with Sarah Ward as alternate.

I headed into Tug’s Daycare and Preschool one bright sunny day with a smile on my face, I was very excited for the day ahead of me. I had brought my set-up fashion show building, which was mainly red and blue colored; you had to hook rods together and colorful tarps draped over them that said “Fashion Show” across them, and a whole bunch of spunky clothes to play with. Once I carried it into the schoolager’s room, schoolager’s is a Tug’s term for anyone above the age of five that goes to the daycare, with my set-up I had kids already ready to use it. All of the kids in the room helped set it up together and we got ready to have a fashion show.…

A shocking trend is gaining ground in teen dressing. For example, last summer, my 13-year-old daughter needed a dress to attend a friend's birthday dinner. What we found was a black “something” (is what I will call it) with a neckline so low that my condition for buying it was a fill-in-the-gap black undergarment. She was not happy about it but complied.…

To expand my knowledge and take up a challenge in another creative field, I participated in the annual fashion show at Liberty. Although I was the designer with the least experience and one of the few who is not majoring in fashion design, I demonstrated as much passion for creativity as everyone else in the show. However, I often experienced low self-esteem whenever I failed to sew an invisible zipper or a seamless seam finish, but I kept looking for video tutorials and encouraged myself not to underestimate my ability. Before I knew it, I had spent an entire spring break finishing the final garment. My design inspiration came from millions of asteroids with different formations and sizes in outer space. The dress I made is a sleeveless tube dress with a sparkling front-split that highlights a modern, sexy, and feminine look. To incorporate my inspiration of asteroids into this look, I depicted a scene of the asteroids floating in space by adhering multiple rhinestones around the neckline and sprinkling glitter to the front-split fabric of the dress. Throughout the fashion show, I had to practice my patience, strengthen my sewing skills, and most importantly, take the initiative and turn a dress from a drawing into a reality. These skills are not only going to benefit my future career but also enrich my personal life. As time passes, I see my dad's opposition to my major as a blessing in disguise because it has given me an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and discover how strongly I feel about art and…

We learned to sew. We learned to alter patterns and even design and make our own. We learned how to take a baggie pant pattern and turn it into the skin tight look we saw in magazines and on TV. Most of the styles in dresses and tops were extremely easy to whip out with the new ‘Simple’ patterns being produced by the 3 major pattern companies. Learning to sew was one of the life changing events for a girl. Suddenly she was master of her own wardrobe as well as home fashions. If you could understand garment construction and fabric capabilities, you were well on your way to independence from the fashion market availability in shops. We would have girl afternoons and overnights where everyone was sewing. We could whip 2 or 3 outfits each in that time. You could have tied me to a sewing machine then and I would not have complained. My mother even sewed my senior prom dress that I designed. It was lavender with lots of lace trim. She was a genius in her craft. Needless to say, I still have it" V. Templeton (personal communication, October 16, 2016). (See Figure…
