Gayle's Symbolism
A teacher of 25 years, an optimistic, thriving, calm, and brilliant person with an astounding story that goes beyond words. Gayle was the only male sibling out of four and was sexually abused by his mother. At the age of 16 him and his mother were in an immense fight that resulted in her choking Gayle, trying to kill him. Gayle’s mother was a large woman, weighing almost 600 pounds, so when he defended himself by shoving her off of him she fell and broke her knee. While his mother was recovering in the hospital she refused to be active which resulted in the formation of blood clots that lead to her death of a pulmonary embolism. Gayle being only 16 years old thought that he was the cause of his mother’s death. Gayle came to the Center for Nonviolence about a year and a half ago not knowing where to turn in life. One day he stumbled across an ad for the Center of Nonviolence while being on his laptop, he then called and set up an appointment not even knowing what the institution was about. That is when he met Nicki, his advocate. Gayle said Nicki was a big part in helping him file for a protective order against his ex-husband that was a verbally abusive person and a drug user. They were together for 19 years and married for one. Gayle knew it was time to go when he realized his husband was involved with drugs. This is when he started receiving threats from his husband such as, “I am going to burn your house down.” Gayle and his husband are now divorced and the protective order is still in place. Gayle is still teaching high school …show more content…
I was at a loss for words after the interview. I couldn’t believe that a person could go through so much and still be so full of hope. When I first met Gayle, I could feel in his presence that he was a joyful and charismatic man. I could tell that he wanted his story to inspire and help others. I am so grateful for this opportunity to share his story to encourage others that there is

On Saturday July 2, 2010 I meet Tiffany a 10 year old girl that has leukemia at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. We started talking and when she told me she had leukemia I was surprised how happy she seemed, so I asked her why she seems so happy when she knows she has a disease that’s life threatening, her response was “you only live once and if something were to happen to me the day after tomorrow I don’t want to have any regrets “like I wish I did that” I want to know that I lived my life to the fullest when it’s time for me to go.” When Tiffany told me that it inspired me because you don’t know what the future holds. Although this little girl had gone through intense sessions of chemotherapy somehow she still found the strength to influence…

As Wiesel states in the Interview, “ How grateful I should be that I am here, and look, you and I are here walking, remembering, helping, thinking of what to do with our lives without memories”(Wiesel). This shows how Elie was very grateful to be alive and seeing everything again and being able to give his testimony. This quote is important because Elie's faith has been somewhat recovered as he is is thankful for living and without his memories he could do nothing. Elie also states in the interview, “ believe me, Oprah I can’t understand either. I was the wrong person for it”(Wiesel). This quote shows how he doesn’t understand why he survived and he knows it's a miracle. This is important because miracle can only occur when you have faith in God which means that me has faith that God let him live in order for him to tell others what he went through. This is how in the interview Elie has recovered some of his faith as he is thankful to be alive and knows it was a…

I repeated these words to myself as I looked in the mirror wondering how I could tell Yolanda, Martin, Dexter, and sweet little Bernice… Oh, Bernice! She had just turned five less than a month ago. How could I tell them their beloved father has been shot? How will they understand? Yolanda was the oldest and the wisest. There is no way I could sugarcoat this. I slumped down behind the bathroom door and took a deep breath. What originally began as a day filled with strength, service, and self-reliance had now ended filled with despair, disbelief, and damage.…

Watching Belinda’s story was much difficult than I had initially expected. Hearing her family talk about what an inspirational and caring women she was and then about how devastating it was when she passed away was particularly hard. It was such a shame that such a spirited woman had died so young and from such a painful disease. When watching Gemma’s story, I felt very inspired to give more to the community and make the world a better place. I felt a sense of pride and joy at seeing someone give so much of themselves to people who had so little. It was incredibly satisfying seeing someone who had been searching for something to complete her life to find it and work so hard to keep it.…

Using pathos, she emotionally tugged at heart strings when she talked about her family. She talks about how this disease has not broken her family, but has given them the will to fight and be supportive. She talks about her mother, and that even though she has a dying child, she is there for her in any time of need, even just to give her a smile. At the end of her speech, she speaks as though she is saying goodbye to her children due to this disease. She says “I will not hurry to leave you my children, but when I go, I pray that you will not suffer shame on my account” (Paragraph 18, line 5). She states her children’s names so that you feel like it is something that you can personally relate…

Despite Carrie’s misfortune, she wears a smile every day and hands out hugs like candy. After having my first experiences with Carrie, I decided to expand my horizons and help others outside of my school. I began volunteering at a program called FUSE (Families United for Support and Encouragement). They sponsor a plethora of events including an adaptive swim program, which is where I spend my time in the fall. I also joined a program at my church, SonRise, which offers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities an opportunity to build a Christian community. These programs have taught me how to be better a person and have truly enriched my…

    1984 Symbolism Analysis

Orwell uses many forms of symbolism in his novel 1984. Just a few of these symbols are the rats that Winston is afraid of, the diary where he keeps all his thoughts and feelings, and the gin that both Winston and other public figures turn to help control their emotions. Another notable symbol is the telescreen, which evokes feelings of dictatorship over the population, as they are constantly being watched for any signs of rebellion. Orwell’s symbols all point to the same general idea: the weakening of the ability to think for oneself.…

The cartoon depicting two men standing on the edge of a sidewalk with a telescreen that speaks to them, calling them by name, informing them that they may cross the street is relevant to the book 1984. In 1984, there are telescreens that are controlled by Big Brother and used to watch all of what the citizens of Oceania do and are capable of calling each individual by their full name when necessary. Although the citizens of Oceania, much like the men in the cartoon, are afraid of the telescreen’s abilities and its knowledge of their every day lives, no one questions the telescreens’ need overall.…

There are hundreds and thousands of tribulations in the world, as deafness to Beethoven, like blind to Helen Keller, to polio to Roosevelt. While we face them directly and combat fearlessly, sufferings can be turned into catalyst to success. I am so lucky that I¡¯ve never confronted these trials so far in my life, and I¡¯ve never considered myself as such a tough girl to be able to conquer them. However, Morrie, the dying professor, convinces me that so long as you embrace love, there is nothing impossible!…

Morrie Schwartz was a great man. He was a man who searched for and found contentment in life by enjoying each moment to its fullest. He was my beloved husband and father of my two sons Rob and Jon. We will never forget his kindness, his compassion, and his love towards others. Through his guidance and wisdom; he has helped others figure out the meaning of life for themselves. Morrie has impacted me in a great way, and probably has to the rest of you. He has taught me peace, forgiveness, love, and compassion. I couldn’t have done it without him. He helped me build a strong family foundation filled with giving, receiving, love and affections. Most kids these days are shy of their parents, but not our family. Our family is quite the opposite because of Morrie. I have learnt a great many lessons from Morrie, and I’m sure a lot of these lessons you have learned as well. There are some important lessons I would like to share with all of you today, that Morrie would have liked me to say. First is his family. Morrie once said “If I was divorced, or living alone and had no children. This disease would be so much harder to get through. Sure people would come and visit, like friends and associates but it’s not the same as having someone who will not leave. Someone you know who is watching you, someone you know who truly loves you”. If I never had been taught that lesson, I wouldn’t be cherishing my family as much as I do today. One last great lesson Morrie has probably taught us all is “love goes on”. Morrie always said that when you die, your relationships you had on earth never dies. Your body leaves but people will always still have you in their hearts. Morrie will live on through all of us. I don’t,…
