Gay-Straight Alliance Club Reflection

A leadership role that I am currently taking on in high school is the President of the Gay-Straight Alliance club (GSA). As someone who is a part of the LGBT+ community, I wanted to give back any way possible. I love to organize hands-on activities, and in this club, my officers and I plan weekly meetings based on different LGBT+ topics to help unify people of our community and our straight allies. After visiting other LGBT+ groups in the past, I found myself separating from the community. These meetings would be immensely serious, and it never felt like anyone could have fun. While I am no jokester, in a room full of my peers, it’s natural to want to enjoy our time together. When my school’s GSA came around, I could not let the meetings be deathly serious seeing as I did not want any other kids to feel as alienated. I ran for President and was fortunately elected. In tough times, when I had no idea what to achieve or what was going on, I kept my cool and made sure the kids were having fun in our quest for knowledge. It was a unique adventure for me in that I had little to no experience watching children, nor did it seem conceivable to emerge outside of my shell. Nevertheless, I pushed myself to accomplish it knowing I would come out better, and more mature person, in the end.
As a part of your Tiffin community, I would love to bring that same philosophy to the campus. I love encouraging people to be open and true about themselves, even if it is to only themselves. This is not a one-way street either, as try to be as honest and open as possible. Nobody should have to feel alone, and as a student at Tiffin, I will assure that everybody feels comfortable and at
