From the discrimination of African-America’s nearly fifty years ago to present day hatred towards gays and lesbians - history is repeating itself. Similar to how African-American’s were not given certain rights because of the color of their skin, gays are also being refused rights based on whom they love. Society seems to always dismiss the unfamiliar until it becomes the new normal. The fact that gay and lesbian couples cannot marry because of the distorted definition of marriage, which states between a man and a woman, is immoral. Allowing gays to marry has been a controversial topic for years and will continue to be until there is equal marriage for all. Legalizing gay marriage will impact the American culture, economy and children. Gay marriage will impact the American society in a variety of ways. Even as a supporter of gay rights I know there are negative effects that come a long with gay marriage. Hate, discrimination and violence are inevitable because of the close-minded individuals who cannot respect the choice of others. As more states pass gay marriage it is becoming more of a trend to support the cause. In the past few years, we have seen the rise of shows like Glee, Modern Family, The New Normal, etc., that show interactions between gay, lesbian and even transgendered characters. It is great to see homosexuals on television because American’s will slowly become more comfortable with the idea, similar to how African-American’s slowly started appearing on television after the anti-discrimination law was passed. With the addition of homosexual marriages in the equation, local state economy and country as a whole will increase.
