Take a Stand: Gay Marriage
Homosexuality is an attraction to individuals of the same sex. Some individuals believe gays shouldn’t exist and especially gay marriage shouldn’t be legal. So far, only nineteen states have legalized same sex marriage, while thirty-one states banned same sex marriage. Many people judge gays like they’re another race, but they are human too just like everyone else. Gay marriage should be legal because, who are people to deny others their right to love? Discrimination is repeating all over again. Lastly, gays are human, so they should be treated equally.
The definition of love in my opinion is a common bond between two people. They might feel they need each other just to breathe and survive, they never want to be apart from each other. Love is unconditionally non-judging, endless feelings for one another. Love cannot be easily broken easily. Everyone has a heart and no one has the right to tell a person who they can love or cannot love. Homosexuals has a right to love whoever they choose to. It’s unfair to homosexuals that they’re judged and told who they can’t love. It shouldn’t matter who they choose to love, it’s none of people business. The only thing that matters in a marriage is love. How would you feel to be judged every second of the day? Love doesn’t judge and so shouldn’t you. “The right to marry, and to marry the person of one’s choice is a fundamental right and a necessary aspect of human happiness” (Goetting, 2013, p.138).
Discrimination is an unjust treatment of others. Discrimination is the dislike of something or someone because of a feature, either physical or mental. Judging others because you don’t like them. What happened to the saying, don’t judge a book by its cover. Past generations have experienced discrimination so much. For instance, slavery African Americans and were put into slavery and worked for the white man. Next, in the 1950’s and 60’s racism was at an all-time high. Blacks and whites were segregated. Blacks couldn’t even use the same restrooms as the whites. It has been shown and proven that these times were hard and unjust. That is, knowing that previous generations went through that torture, why would you do it to others? Literally, people have marched streets day and night to fight for their justice. Individuals have sacrificed their selves and went to jail not only to fight for them but for the future of generations. Stop repeating history all over again.
Thomas Jefferson stated, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”. Marriage is valuable, free people must be allowed to choose their spouses, and gays (as gays) are free people like everyone else (Goetting, 2013). Everyone has different beliefs, no one is exactly the same. Why bash gays just because they have different views? If that’s the case, then everyone should be fighting each other because of all humanity different views. Gays have rights too and one of those rights is to be treated with equality. Gays are experiencing treatment of racism and discrimination.
Therefore, gays should be treated equally, they have the right to love whoever they choose to. “The decision whether or not to marry belongs properly to individuals, not to the government” (Stoddard, 1990). Why is it so important for people to stop gay marriage? Certain individuals make it their personal vendetta to make homosexuals life’s miserable. What did they ever do to you? In what way are they harming society? Our constitution grant us many liberties. One of our civil liberties is the pursuit of happiness. Gays can’t enjoy that because they’re constantly reminded that they’re bondage is prohibited, that violates their freedom. Why should people get to choose who marries who? We should all be equal no matter whether we are black, white, straight, or gay. Everyone deserves marriage.
