Legalizing Gay Marriage Imagine being in love with someone and not being about to show your true affection by marrying them. Gays and lesbians have to deal with that everyday. As an article states "In the 2000 census it was found that there were 601,209 committed gay couples in America." So why not just let these couples get married? Not letting them is going against human rights. Many people say that gay couples should not have kids .. why not? Marriage is suppose to be about love, it should not matter what gender you are. Gay marriage should be legalized because failing to legalize it is a violation of human rights. Human rights should not be ignored because gay people do not choose to be gay as this paper says "....that people do not choose their sexual orientation and cannot change it; that gays and lesbians have a long history as victims of discrimination"(Gay Marriage 2). Gay people do not choose to be gay so they should not be dicriminated for how they feel. Being gay does not stop you from being a good person, you can still acheive anything a straight person can. So why make it such a big deal about the person you love and show compassion for. Many states have been battling the legialzation of gay marriage but as Nelson Mandeal says "to deny their human rights is to challenge their very humanity."(Nelson Mandeal) Gay couples put up a fight and are challenged everyday, but nothing stops them from being who they are. Many people put up a fight about gay couples having children. But as statistics show "demographic data show significant diversity among same-sex couples with children. These families live throughout the country: of same-sex couples by region, 26% in the South, 24% in New England, and 21% in the Pacific states are raising children." (Cathy Renna 1). This just shows that gay couples and gay marriages should be able to have children. As this story states "...and that sexual orientation does not prevent a person from being a good parent—supported judgment in favor of the AFER attorneys" (Gay Marriage 3). Being gay has nothing to do with how good your parenting skills are. Being gay and having kids just shows how proud you are to show that you are not afraid to show off the relationship. It will also teach your kids to be who you want to be and to never stop in what you believe. This story also states that "for it had no effect on the rights of same-sex couples to raise children or on the procreativepractices of other couples. Nor did Proposition 8 have any effect on religious freedom or on parents'rights to control their children's education." (Gay Marriage 4). Proposition 8 did not any effect on gay couples having kids. They had no religious freedoms or the parenting rights because the prop 8 was only about marrriage.
