Gattaca Vs Elysium
The movie Gattaca, is about creating the perfect child. One that has perfect health, a high IQ and a long life span. In the movie, the alleles from both parents are chosen so that the combination produces the optimal arrangement in terms of the child's genotype. Vincent is the main character and he was born naturally without genetic engineering. His genetic test shows that he has bad eyesight, heart problems and a life expectancy of about 30 years old. Very early during his childhood Vincent knew that he wanted to fly into space. However, due to his genetic profile he can only work in basic jobs that are for the unskilled.
As Vincent grows older he is determine to pursue his dream of flying into space. He uses an illegal DNA broker who provides the identity of Jerome Morrow a young man who is fully qualified to be a flier. He has the right genetic material that puts him above the rest in terms of mental and physical skills. During the movie Vincent routinely obtains blood, hair, and urine samples from the real Jerome Morrow to pass identification and screening tests. The real Morrow is not able to live at his potential because he was crippled in an accident.
The day comes when Vincent must launch into space. As he prepares to board he discovers that there is one final genetic test and that he is not carrying any of Jerome’s samples. He performs a urinal test and it shows that he is an invalid. However, the Dr. that is in charge resets the machine and gives him a valid pass. Vincent is able to beat all odds and is successful regardless of his genetic makeup.
