Andrew Carnegie and Bill Gates: both incredibly rich, incredibly generous (or so it appears) men from two differing time periods. Both men were self-made and owed their wealth to much hard work, and both were distinguished figures during their times. Furthermore, both utilized their wealth to perpetuate meaningful social change rather than reforming society altogether. Despite the similarities they share, the two men originated from relatively different backgrounds and did their benefacting through different methods.…
In his essay, “What’s in a Name?” Henry Louis Gates Jr. travels back to an event in time where his father encountered prejudice and at that time, Henry Louis Gates Jr. made an extraordinary realization at a young age. We have all had small realizations, but like Gates Jr., I had one that changed my life.…
“Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm”. Winston Churchill. During this first session and all future sessions I plan to be successful. Success to me is being the best person I can be, being a leader and becoming one won’t be easy. But to succeed you have to lead and that I know I can do. It is certain that when you are exposed to an author’s work you want to categorize that author into a certain group. Perhaps this practice of categorizing a composer can help the reader understand the piece of literature. Henry Gates has helped understand and criticize many African American Literature authors that are exposed through the canon in secondary English Education. As a teacher, it is essential to introduce Postcolonialism into the classroom as well as postcolonialist critics such as Henry Gates Jr. Furthermore, as I teach my African American literature class I have found myself searching for supplemental material to suppose the authors that I introduce in the class. The Signifying Monkey has certainly made valid and original points that I would be inclined to bring in my class room. Many may agree that Gates’ work is a multilayered approach and includes many open ended questions through the profound ideals that are presented. Furthermore, Gates presents very abstract and advance ideas for the time that his book was published. I found his work to be astounding although very challenging to wade through in one sitting.…

There comes a time or two in our lives where we struggle with certain aspects which we will overcome at a later time in life. As a child, I was told that I was very outgoing and friendly, but I felt like a shy and quiet soul. While my friends were shining stars and found merriment in groups, I was just merely a shadow behind them, finding content in being alone. However, teachers would notice this trait of mine and try to pull me out of my shell time and time again. When facing the judgemental eyes of my teacher and curious classmates, I would freeze up and an uneasiness would fill my body from head to toe. Panic would set in and my words would come out in a jumbled mess. Public speaking was just not my forte.…
Throughout my reading of Lake and von Baeyer’s article, “Tips for Successful Students” I found many similar characteristics between the successful student and myself. Success is a process of changeling obstacles. In order to succeed you must overcome these obstacles. Motivation is the driving force behind success, it is the entity that makes people do things they don’t want to. Studying is key to success, there is a high correlation between studying and success. Serval studying skills such as pre-test taking and taking clearer notes can put you on course with your goals. I’ve learned that success is not something defined by others it depend only on you and your goals. This is important because success should only rely on yourself and not others. This year I plan on tackling success by means of motivating myself and studying a lot. I intend to complete the goals I set and succeed in my…
Motivation from other is the key to success. Without motivation from others, a person will never know what he or she did wrong, will not have any determination to do anything, and will not strive to do better. For example, if a person wants to run a six km marathon, he would asks their family or friends for some support. Family would dedicate their time and money to help support their children to run the six km marathon. When that marathon comes, the family and friends would go to the event and cheer for that person. With that kind of motivation and support that would make the person feel happy and successful. If the person finishes last or first, his family and friends would go comfort the person giving him good comments like “You did a great job!” or “You almost had it. Next time you’ll get it!”…
