Gas Leak Detection
Gas leak detection is the process of identifying potentially hazardous gas leaks by means of various sensors. These sensors usually employ an audible alarm to alert people when a dangerous gas has been detected. Common sensors used today include Infrared Point Sensor, Ultrasonic gas detectors, electrochemical gas detectors, and Semiconductor Sensors. More recently, infrared imaging sensors have come into use. All of these sensors are used for a wide range of applications, and can be found in industrial plants, refineries, wastewater treatment facilities, vehicles, and around the home.
HISTORY
Gas leak detection methods became a concern after the effects of harmful gases on human health were discovered. Before modern electronic sensors, early detection methods relied on less precise detectors. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, coal miners would bring canaries down to the tunnels with them as an early detection system against life threatening gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane. The canary, normally a very songful bird, would stop singing and eventually die in the presence of these gases, signaling the miners to exit the mine quickly. Before the development of electronic household carbon monoxide detectors in the 1980s and 90s, carbon monoxide presence was detected with a chemically infused paper that turned brown when exposed to the gas. Since then, many technologies and devices have been developed to detect, monitor, and alert the leakage of a wide array of gases
GASEOUS DANGER
Here is a gas leak detector circuit that detects the leakage of LPG gas and alerts the user through audio-visual indications. The circuit operates off a 9V PP3 battery. Zener diode ZD1 is used to convert 9V into 5V DC to drive the gas sensor module. The gas leakage circuit uses the SEN-1327 gas sensor module from RhydoLABZ. Its output goes high when the gas level reaches or exceeds certain point. A preset in the module is used to set the threshold.

    The purpose of this experiment is to conduct different experiments that will illustrate the different gas laws. We will be given a list of equipment need to perform the experiment as well as general rules to help us do the experiment. According to Boyles, it states that a fixed amount of ideal gas that is kept at a fixed temperature, that the pressure and volume are inversely proportional, if the temperature stays unchanged. According to Charless Law, if the pressure of a gas is held constant, as the gas is heated, its volume will increase and that cooling the gas will cause the volume to decrease. Charles law describes that of the Gay- Lussacs law, who had actually referenced unpublished work of Charles. The law states that at a constant pressure, the volume of the given mass of the ideal gas will increase/ decrease, the same ways as the temperature will increase/ decrease. An easier way to interpret this is that at a constant pressure, volume and temperature are directly proportional. Materials Lab quest Vernier gas pressure sensor Temperature probe 20 mL gas syringe 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask 3 600mL beakers hot plate Dry ice rubber stopper with 2-way valve Procedure and observations (Part 1) The first thing we did in this experiment was measure pressure and volume. To do this we used the lab quest and syringe. You attach the syringe to the valve of the gas pressure sensor. We pick a volume and when reading the volume on the syringe make sure you read from the inside black ring on the piston of the syringe. Make sure to connect the gas pressure sensor to the Lab Quest and choose new from the file menu. Then you will set up the data collection, first change the collection mode to events with entry, then enter volume and units (mL) and select ok.
