As an accomplished tri-athlete, mountain climber and health fanatic, Gary Earl Johnson, would be one of the healthiest presidents to ever be elected in the United States. What do we know about Gary Johnson? Where does he stand on repealing the Affordable Care Act, taxes, and gun control? His viewpoints on these controversial issues is intriguing and make him an interesting and viable third party candidate for the presidency.
The 2016 Libertarian Party presidential nominee, Gary Earl Johnson, was born in Minot, North Dakota on January 1, 1953 to Lorraine and Earl W Johnson. His mother worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and his father was a public-school teacher. Gary was raised both in North Dakota and New Mexico. In 1975, he graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor’s of Science, in Political Science. Gary is an accomplished businessman. He founded Big J Enterprises in 1976, which grew into a multi-million-dollar business and one of the leading construction companies in New Mexico. Gary sold the business in 1999 to focus more on his political career.
In 1977 he was married to his college girlfriend, Dee Simms, they had two children Seah, born in 1979 and Erik, born in 1982. Neither of his children have political aspirations and try to lead very private lives. Gary and Dee were divorced in 2005. Currently, Gary is engaged to Kate Prusack, they have been engaged since 2009. Gary Johnson entered politics in 1994 when he ran for the Governor of New Mexico and beat out the Democratic incumbent. He ran on a low-tax, anti-crime, and common-sense business platform. During his service for two terms as Governor of New Mexico he cut the ten percent annual growth rate of the budget down by using his shrewd business experience. He is also credited with setting state and national records for the number of vetoes used while in office. In 2003, Gary was term-limited and retired briefly from politics.
