what is gangrene? gangrene is the necrosis or death of soft tissue due to obstructed circulation, usually followed by decomposition and putrefaction. this can occur because because of a myriad of reasons however, for each different type, there is a different cause. types of gangrene

gas gangrene gas gangrene is rare however to be taken seriously, it occurs due to an infection deep inside of the body such as the muscles or organs as a result of trauma. the bacteria that causes gas gangrene, produces toxins and gas that destroy tissue around the affected. symptoms include the area turning a yellow or grey and often when compressed, there will be cracking sounds surrounding the area.

wet gangrene unlike other gangrenes, wet gangrene always involves an infection. this occurs due to burns, trauma and crushed limbs. symptoms of this include
it occurs due to impaired circulation and as a result of poor circulation. tissue will dry up and turn into a dark purplish colour and often fall off. if not properly treated, dry gangrene will often lead to wet gangrene if infection occurs.

fournier's gangrene also a rare condition, fournier's gangrene affects the genitals of the patient and will often affect men more than women. if the toxins are released into the blood, the condition will be life threatening.

how to treat gangrene usually, the main treatment will be involve antibiotics. and generally amputation must occur to prevent further infection. however there are other therapies such as maggot therapy. maggot therapy involves putting maggots onto the affected area and consuming all the dead tissue.
