Gandhi Jayanti

2nd October, every year is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti, the birthday of Mohandas Karmchand Gandhi, the most famous freedom fighter of our mother India. Mahatma Gandhi is also lovingly known as Bapu by all. Gandhi was one of the most humble and modest person, mother India could ever give birth to, however, in his biography, he admits that he did not find himself worthy of the title and was often pained and upset by it.
Gandhi was the epitome of peace, non-violence, truth and duty. He practiced everything he preached. The common people appreciated his beliefs and ideals during the struggle for Indian independence, and by the end of it Gandhi had the whole nation following in his footsteps, adopting his beliefs as theirs and spreading his words all through the nation. This love, respect and faith he got from the people of his country got him the title “Father of the Nation”. Till today this title exclusively sticks to him for if it wasn’t for his pure values and methods, India would have never got her freedom from the British rule.
Whenever there is a discussion about Mahatma Gandhi, the first thing that comes to my mind, is the famous words that Gandhi told the youth about Global Community. The words “you must be the change you wish to see in the world”. These words resonate in me.
“You must be the change, you want to see” powerful words for such young people. When the youth hears this, we grow accustom to this, we grow indifferent to the world around us because we think that our decisions and opinions don’t matter.
For most of my life the term “YOUNG” meant that I was unable to do many things. I was not able to make a difference; I felt that my existence was 1 by 100th of someone 10 years older than me. But when I read these glorious words of Mahatma Gandhi, I realize that I too have a duty to this community. That yes, I am part of this complex family called “THE WORLD”. And like any member of this family or this community, my words matter as much. Ghandi believed that with this responsibility, we had a duty to ourselves and also to our community.
Satyagraha or non violence was the most important thing according to Bapu. We are currently living in an era where information travels at the speed of light. When we hear about death and war, we grow angry with the administration, with the government and with the people for the problems. But instead we CAN go outside and discourage just like what Bapu did for the Champaran peasants.
Our passions ignite but we must control these feelings for it’s not only the heart but also the head and the mind that is important. Making Ghandi my mentor, I realized that approaching a question does not always mean to use the end of a gun. By using the end of a pen, I can do much more by writing, speaking and demonstrating that “We can make a difference in the community”
Ghandi believed that the youth of the world is a new hope. We must be in charge, we must be the change and we must embody Ghandi in spirit for his non-violence and his sense of duty to help our brothers and sisters across the globe.
I have faith in humanity. Ghandi did say “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty”. As the youth and future leaders of the next generation, we must stand up. We must hold our hands with our brothers and sisters across the globe. We must continue with this movement of peace and hold it for the next generation. We must hold this glassed globe in our palms and pass in on to the next generation. One day we will achieve world peace and till that time we must stand up and speak for our rights like Ghandi spoke.
The father of the nation said that “You must be the change, you want to see”. But I say that “We must be the change, we want to see”.
