He is going from being a longshoreman to a broker for a securities firm by the name of Cohen, Cullen and Cozinni. They headquarter in New
Orleans but have several branches.” “Who has?”
“The Family has learned long ago that to make money, big money, it is better to comply than question why. Does that make sense?” “No!”
“That is the way the game is now played for our friend Ignacio Bercinni, also known as Iggy. Where the bastard fits in, I haven’t a clue, but I will eventually know. This is a long range plan.”

The highlight of the establishment is a large wooden bar that sparkles from oil, age and cleanliness, and the various blinking neon lights that brighten up the etched mirrors on the wall behind the bar. There are several padded booths of tubular steel that are covered with worn and tom heavy red plastic. Alongside the booths are several square wooden tables with ladder back chairs that have been broken and crudely mended.
Filippo, after setting down his cold bottle of Jax beer, says, “You know what today is, and don’t say Friday.”
Picca had no idea, so he just shrugged his shoulders. Filippo smiled and said “My anniversary and yours too. It has been six months since I got run out of Ancona. If it wasn’t for Uncle Antonio, I’d probably still be looking for a good paying job in America.”
Picca, thumping the table with his fat fingers, replied, “As long as I am a longshoreman I’ll be looking for a job.”
“Don’t worry Amico, as you know I have connections, and in America, especially in New Orleans, it is good to have connections. Did you know that New Orleans was, or maybe still is, the original Family headquarters in America? This is an Italian town with a French pedigree, but the French can’t scratch their butts without getting an okay from the Italians. This place is different and the prostitutes are also different.”

“The House” by Kim Krupp Pepe is a selection about a girl and her memories of her old house as a child. The main idea is that she is grown up and will never experience the same memories as she once had, but she also cherishes her memories of the house that she once lived in as a child. For example, in the last paragraph, she states that “Now I’m always kind of torn between being sad because I feel like a child and yet knowing I am not and can never be again. Another part of me feels happy for having a place where all my past is stored and secreted away.”…

And they seemed like trustable people, so she brushed off that thought. Ricardo’s son walked down the steps into the living room, where Esperanza was sitting. “W-Who are you?” asked the six-year old boy, “Are you going to steal from us?”…

People long to be accepted by a group throughout life. This acceptance gives the assurance of support and comfort from others who are alike. People in such groups have set beliefs which cause them to be ignorant towards differences in their surroundings. The strength in organizations provokes fear in those who want to express their individual differences. Those wanting to be different are afraid of the judgmental ridicule they will face from their fellow group members. In the story "The Shining Houses" the author Alice Munro develops the idea that conformity causes people to respond to individual differences with ignorant judgments.
