Racism is one of the issues depicted in the play. The main character, René Gallimard, thought negatively on the Chinese and their culture even though he was in love with a Chinese woman. There are a lot of problems with his racism because it is fueled from his experiences in Paris. He felt that people of the West were lower than the people of the East.
