The Diabetes ‘Breathalyzer’ Chemists at the University of Pittsburgh have come up with a medical invention that may be available to citizens very soon. This new invention, known as the “Diabetes Breathalyzer” is a device that would be used to diagnose and monitor those with diabetes, as well as create a large stepping stone in the medical field. The chemists use a “sol-gel approach,” which is “a method for using small molecules to produce solid materials,” and “combined titanium dioxide with carbon nanotubes” (Science Daily). Using these elements successfully, the properties of the tubes as well at the powers of the titanium dioxide were combined. With the ability to use the powers of the titanium dioxide, the sensor could be activated. One of the chemists, Alexander Star, stated that “Our measurements have excellent detection capabilities.” The group hopes to test the device with human breath samples soon. The continual growth of the medical field and chemistry has gone hand in hand for as long as I can remember. Currently, the only way to test and diagnose diabetes is through blood tests, at the doctor’s and at home. With the advancement of this new device, testing and results could be quicker, and much more convenient for both doctors and patients (especially those who aren’t fans of needles). Along with the added convenience the lower price is an added bonus, especially in our current economic situation. Although this isn’t necessarily an “issue” in chemistry and more of an “improvement,” the subject improves what some would find to be an issue. Like I stated earlier, some of the current methods are inconvenient and expensive, so this device would bring ease to some of those with diabetes. I also found this article to be very interesting, because I often forget how important chemistry is in things that effect daily lives. Chemists are those who give us the ability to live longer and healthier lives with advanced medicine and

According to the CDC (2012), 13,000 youths are diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes every year. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas fails to secrete insulin. If not well managed, this condition can be fatal. Children and adolescents are of a particular concern because they are still in a psychosocial developmental stage that does not promote favorable behaviors towards the proper management of the disease. This paper is a review of the literature on closed-loop insulin delivery systems to evaluate whether they are better for the management of type 1 Diabetes than open-loop continuous insulin delivery systems. The databases searched were CINAHL and MEDLINE EBSCO using the following keywords: Closed-loop insulin delivery system, closed-loop insulin, and type 1 Diabetes. Out of 20 research papers reviewed, 5 were used for this review paper. The 5 research papers were published between the years of 2006 and 2010. The overall result showed that the closed-loop delivery systems were feasible in maintaining tight glycemic control in children and adolescents. While these studies highlighted the benefits of the closed-loop system, they were not specific to the adaptation of adolescents to the technology and their adherence to diabetic treatments. This subject is particularly important to nursing practice because nurses are the primary educators in the healthcare environment. By staying abreast of the evidence based practice of new technologies, nurses are able to properly care for their parents and increase their quality of life.…

    Insulin Pump Vs Diabetes

Unlike the pump with the pen, they have to inject themselves every single time they eat versus setting the amount of insulin they need and the pump automatically delivering it. Some people will argue that the pen is easier to use than the pump, that it is much simpler. They might also argue about the machine malfunctioning or an infection happening. The pen does win with it being easier to use, and it is good to use when the diabetic is first diagnosed, but the pump allows them to go through their day more easily than with the pen. Also, with the worry about the machine malfunction, there is more risk with using the pen because of human error, the pump is less likely to malfunction than if a diabetic were to mess something up with their pen. While the insulin pen has beaten the pump with cost, the pump trumps the pen is all other categories making the price of the pump worth it. Now while this is the biggest argument among diabetics and their parents and it all does really come down to what the diabetic prefers. But, the pump manages to overshadow the pen in…

Talking about diabetes in one thing. Talking about diabetes while it waits your doorstep is a whole other story. I live with a high risk of diabetes. Countless members of my family have been diagnosed with this disease and some have passed away because of it. Diabetes runs through both sides of my family. My paternal grandmother, my maternal grandfather, my maternal grandfather’s brothers, and my maternal grandmother’s older sister all suffer from the same disease. For all of them, the daily routine never changed. They all swallowed pill after pill and conducted blood test after blood test. To this day, I still remember watching them swallow pills the size of almonds and cringing whenever they pricked themselves to conduct a blood test. I…

For many years, people who have been diagnosed with diabetes typically do not live a long life. “Diabetes mellitus is a condition in which the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin or cells stop responding to the insulin that is produced, so that glucose in the blood cannot be absorbed into the cells of the body”(Farflex). There have been many advances in the technology of diabetic supplies; this includes the insulin pump. “Insulin pumps are a medical device used for the administration of insulin in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, also known as continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy”(Wikipedia). The advantages in the technology of the insulin pump are better blood sugar control, a device that closely copies a healthy pancreas, and a flexible lifestyle.…

Patients with diabetes need to understand what diabetes is. Patients who understand what diabetes is and the complicated process associated with the disease are more likely to comply with the prescribed regimen. Diabetes Mellitus is a syndrome with disordered metabolism and inappropriate hyperglycemia due to either a deficiency of insulin secretion or to a combination of insulin resistance and inadequate insulin secretion to compensate (Davis, 2001). Diabetes is a chronic progressive disease that requires lifestyle changes, especially in the areas of nutrition and physical activity. The overall goal of medical and nutritional therapy is to assist persons with diabetes in making self-directed behavioral changes that will improve their overall health (Franz, 2012). Blood glucose monitoring and goals of blood glucose monitoring…

In America 29.1 million people are living with diabetes, which is 9.3% of the population (Statistics of Diabetes 2016). Of that 29.1 million Americans, only 1.25 million have type one diabetes (Statistics of Diabetes 2016). This day in age, type one diabetes has been misunderstood due to the confusion with type two diabetes. Therefore, learning about type one diabetes and the way diabetics live their lifestyle is fairly complex today as diabetes evolves. There are so many complexities that diabetics live with on a daily basis. Being infected with a disease called diabetes, my grandmother, the one that I love the most, had been paralyzed for more than 8 years and finally passed away on October 15, 2016. Seeing her suffering with this kind of sickness for such a long time but I couldn’t do anything to help is what I regret the most. When my grandmother was paralyzed, I was only 9 years old. At such a young age, there’s nothing I can do to help her except watching her become thinner and thinner day by day. Now, I have grown-up, living with a fear that another person in my family can be diagnosed of having diabetes once again, I decide to do a research about this disease. I understand that to prevent the illness…

    Furthering My Education

I’m going to talk about going back to school farthing my education. From the time i graduated from high school i always want to go back to school. I never took the time to do so. I would always look into going back to school or talk about going back to school but never took the time to go. Until one day I started working in child care and that moated me to go even more. Going back to school was hard for me because i looked at it as if I didn't have any money to go to school. I over came all that and went on line to apply for school, and now I am attending Ashford University College. I am going for my Associates in Early Child Hood. Therefore, returning back to school to complete my degree after 7 years was very rational and thinking it out it me and my husband that it was time. We are sometime told that experience is the key to get the perfect job, but I disagree with that, have a degree in that field will help you in and getting that opportunity from a manager or boss will landed you that perfect job. But in years in the workforce I have learned that is not always the case. Employers will sometime use the fact that you don’t have a degree against you and after miss some jobs I really want I refuse to let this happen to me every again. I want from this day forward to be armed with everything that the next candidates have and so I can feel that I belong with them. Today’s workforce is forever growing and in order to land that big jobs or promotion you must be able to compete with other and have extra special things that make you stand out. Experience is very important almost key in some cases, but in my opinion having a college degree will help and will make you very marketable and wanted. Sometimes have a degree or other credential will set you apart from all the other candidates and most of the times that will work in you advantage to…

For 2,000 years diabetes has been recognized as a devastating and deadly disease. In the 17th century a London physician, Dr. Thomas Willis, determined whether his patients had diabetes or not by sampling their urine. If it had a sweet taste he would diagnose them with diabetes mellitus- "honeyed" diabetes. In the early 20th century, diabetologists such as Dr. Frederick Allen prescribed low…

Another key part in the reaction would be C6H12O6, or glucose. Glucose oxidase can be applied to diabetics as mentioned earlier, as biosensors work by "keeping track of the number of electrons that pass through the enzyme by connecting it to an electrode and measuring the resultant charge" (From Biosensors to Food Preservative). This would allow biosensors to monitor blood glucose levels, improving the lives of diabetics. (From Biosensor to Food Preservative)…
