Social Media: Conflict VS Functionalist Perspective
Social media is websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts (Dictionary, 2016). Social media is constantly changing and has large social and economic impacts. From a functionalist perspective, social media is seen as productive and allowing for businesses to prosper, increases interactions and resources, and quick availability of information so all parts of society can function properly together (ProCon, 2016). From a conflict perspective social media is seen as causing potential brain damage and behavior problems to individuals, increased possibility of spread of false information,

This communication is used in society for many different things. An example would be for the promotion of businesses. Many businesses use social media to advertise their products and build customer loyalty (Ta, 2014). Social media is also used in politics. Politicians use social media in elections and to get their message across (Ta, 2016). Social media has been highly successful in promotion of candidates and for rally or movement purposes ( Ta, 2016).
To conclude the functionalist perspective on social media, it plays a huge role in keeping current society in balance and properly functioning. Many different individuals use social media. Social media have some inequalities that apply to the conflict

My favorite perspective in sociology was learning about the functionalist perspective aka functionalism. I do know that it is one of the major concept theories and perspectives in sociology. From class we learned about Emile Durkheim’s interest in this theory on how social order is possible on how society remains relatively stable through functionalism. “Functionalism does interpret every part of society on how it all contributes to the stability and the survival of society”. A social problem is when enough people agree that a condition exists that threatens the quality of their lives and their values, and agree that something should be done about it. Even though people agree that something should be done about this social problem, not all people think it should be handled the same way. One person may have a different perspective on how to handle the situation and another person may have a different way. There are three basic perspectives on social problems and they are;…

Functionalist Perspective on Family Meeting The significant event I have chosen to observe using my new sociological lenses from a functionalist perspective is our family meeting due to preparations for Aunty Mal’s 21st birthday party. All age groups from grandparents to parents and children have gathered here at Opa and Oma’s house for one purpose and that is to plan and host the most fun and memorable birthday party. Our grandparents decided to have the party at their house seeing that it holds…

Functionalist perspective is a way of looking at the entire system. We as a society and a world are from a functionalist perspectinve a whole and complete entity. If we look at it in the same way and go from their we can safely say that human activity is the dominant influence. This influence is what affects the environment. Let me see if I can make this more clear. If we take America as an example we can see that we love entertainment. The joy we have for boating directly affects aquatic life…

literacy inventory log, I checked my social media, homework, and class notes for nearly all my entries. This I identify as functionalist perspective, as functional type literacy implies that language has the specific purpose of conveying information for professional or mundane tasks. Such tasks include repeating instructions, reading emails, writing schedules, and other actions that generally require minimal understanding of language structure. The Functionalist Perspective argues that there is more value…

years of segregation and of racial prejudice; but how far have we, as a society, really come? We need not look very far to secure our answer, but we must look under the surface of media, see between the lines of dialogue, and view our own behaviours more closely. When I began to think of a worthy topic for this essay, I never thought I would be writing on racism. To be honest, growing up in Toronto with many other cultures taught me to appreciate the uniqueness…

The functionalist perspective addresses the functions of society, both the function and the dysfunction prevalent in America. The AIDS epidemic, however, acts as a dysfunction. In the same relationship that the upper class require a lower class to maintain their social status, so does the functioning of a society need dysfunction to maintain its current role in American culture. This apparent inequality and large disparity with AIDS prevalence in low income, homosexual communities, and minority groups…
