Pattern of Health Perception and Health Management:

List two normal assessment findings that would be characteristic for each age group.

List two potential problems that a nurse may discover in an assessment of each age group.

When a toddler does not feel good they say they are “sick”. Health management is influenced and dependent on their parents or caregivers.

A toddler can brush their teeth or perform hand washing when directed by parents or caregivers as a health promoting activities.

Based on what they can see and do, preschoolers have an accurate perception of their own bodies and its function.

Preschoolers understand the internal body as hollow and do not understand its function.

The school-aged child has the ability to participate in health promoting behaviors.

Toddlers are at risk for increased blood lead levels.

Toddlers are at risk for poor health maintenance if parents or caregivers are not proactive.

The preschooler becomes vulnerable and has a fear of loss of control when compared to adults’ size.

The preschooler can become upset over minor injuries.

School-aged children are at risk to develop poor health habits by learning from their caregivers.

Nutritional-Metabolic Pattern:

During this time toddlers will start to wean from breastfeeding and bottles and start drinking from a cup.

Toddlers can feed themselves with their hands or with the use of a spoon.

Toddlers use mealtime for a sense of control and exploration.

During the preschool age food preferences emerge.

Express opinions about food to show opinion and control of environment.

Learn good and bad food preferences from others in groups.

Preschoolers eat meals away from home and the schools are required to provide healthy meals.

On average the school-aged child should consume between 1200-1800 calories per day.

School-aged children are willing to try new foods.

With the help of parents school-ages children can learn to make healthy food choices that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

Because of the transition from breast milk or formula, the toddler is at risk for iron deficiencies.

If a bottle is given with juice or milk, the toddler is at risk for dental caries.

Toddlers may have trouble chewing or swallowing some foods.
