Full Moon and Little Frieda
Full moon and little Frieda is a poem written by Ted Hughes. The poem is about Frieda’s first word ‘Moon’, but in this poem, Moon represents her father, which is Ted. He is amazed at her for the first time calling his name. It starts of just like this “on a cool evening with dogs barking and buckets clanking with spider’s web with dew looking like a mirror.” And cows are wandering in their lane “A dark river of blood, many boulders”
In the first stanza, he says “as you listening”, it means that he’s trying to put you in his situation or current atmosphere, or in this case, in the barn. It is at night when the cows are getting ready to get back to their ‘home’. It is a silence night where there are spider webs with dews on it. In the second stanza, he shows us that the ‘cows are going home in the lane there, looping the hedges with their warm wreaths of breath’, meaning that the cows are going back to their home in their comfortable lane and that they are happy. ‘A dark river of blood, many boulders’ suggests that he wants the reader to think there is some sort of sadness when his wife left him because she committed suicide. But when Frieda cries Moon, his reaction changed become surprised and amazed because he is very happy to hear his name being called.
I think it is not a sad poem, but some parts like ‘dark river of blood’ suggest that maybe he is having a family trouble, which could be due to the fact that his wife committed suicide.
This poem is well-written in a very simply English even though the meaning behind it is not really obvious. The first time I read the poem, I thought it’s just about a little girl on a farm full of cows calls for the moon. But after a bit of research, I realized that Moon represents her father. The cows represent both sadness and happiness. I see that it is written in 3 stanzas. The first two stanzas, it has 5 verses. There is a lot of imagery going on in the poem that really put you in the peaceful mind, the animals doing what they are suppose to do (going back to the farm because it is late night already). I also see that there is no rhythm or rhyme in the poem. While you’re reading the poem, the feeling of relaxed and chilled are felt.
This is a short poem which I love as I can’t stand long poems that literally need deciphering before one can understand them. It had no rhyming or rhythm so one was free to put your one style into it which makes it more fun. I liked the subject of the poem and it was to me a very meaningful and well written poem.

In the second stanza, he is reminiscing about his childhood and how he felt imprisoned in school (gazed upon the bars). He speaks of a fluttering stranger (line 26), which seems to indicate that not that person is fluttering, but his eyelids are. His eyes are unclosed, because he is daydreaming, but soon he actually falls asleep and thinks about his teacher, who he detests. He describes the anticipation of being able to go outside again only by hearing the bells of the old church-tower, since he is only looking out the window and waiting for the doors to open for anybody to pick him up and take him outside.…

I chose this poem because I like how it opens with a quiet still scene with a couple looking out at the moonlit water listening to the waves, you get the impression that it could be a love poem or something of that nature. Then the poems tone changes a lot. The speaker suddenly isn't describing the water as tranquil and relaxing, he describes it like it has a inevitable steady force. To him the water is symbolic of how the worlds lost faith/religion, and he hopes him and his lover can hold onto those things. After the first stanza the poem has a desperate, sad, desolate feeling.…

This poem is written in third person narrative by an ominous voice telling the fathers thought process. The narrator begins the poem saying, “Sad is the man who is asked for a story and can’t come up with one.” This intro not only gives us a foreshadowing look onto the poem, but tells us the emotions the father feels given to us by the all knowing narrator. He tells us the dad is sad that he can’t think of a new story which shows us that he just want to please his son and in turn portraying love.…

Although when it comes to the death or the upcoming death of his father, you see this whole demeanor change, the way he writes shows a more frantic and fragile state. It is almost as if he is begging and pleading for his father to fight death, not to give up, and to continue living, not just for himself but for him as well because he is on the verge of tears. When I look at how other people look at the poem's theme and read how others have analyzed it, they pick up on the same thing but have slightly different reactions. The way Andrew Walker wrote his analysis seemed to have the same analysis when discovering the theme. However, he interpreted it differently, where the theme was somber and aggressive to me, but to Walker, it was more aggressive rather than a good mix of both.…

The sentences are not structured in a conventional way, and it is slightly confusing, but also helps to create a melodic rhythm. When read out loud, the poem sounds almost like a lullaby, and even if the reader doesn’t understand the actual meaning, they still experience the atmosphere of strange contentment. The symbolic mention of the seasons and nature also contributes to this hypnotically content mood; the seasons, weather, celestial bodies, etc. are mentioned a few times, somewhat randomly; for example, on line three “spring summer autumn winter”, line eight “sun moon stars rain”, line eleven “autumn winter spring summer”, etc. These random interjections are almost like a chant, and break up the actual plot of the…

An important aspect is the structure of the poem. It is composed of two stanzas, each stanza containing one sentence that is broken up at various intervals. Both stanzas have each ten lines. The intervals that the sentences are broken differ from line to line, the longest line being 8 syllables and the shortest being 3 syllables. This structure gives the author flexibility, writing this poem like he is writing a story. He is breaking up the sentence into various intervals in order to create “musicality” among the last words of each line.…

Hughes conveys a sense of fascination throughout the poem through certain devices, metaphysical aspects and through the structure. The poem is a lyrical poem, which also adds to the fascination as lyrical poems are usually written as love poems.…
