After inputting the data it is noted that X-Double Bar is 5.1 and that R-Bar is 1.08 Looking at the charts for the first part of the problem it is noticed that Samples 19 (6.12) and 21(5.973) are above the Upper Control Limit (5.89) of the X-Bar chart. For the R-Bar chart it is noted that Sample 18 (2.74) falls outside of the Upper Control Limit (2.472). By removing these samples, the following data and charts have changed.

Reviewing the updated data it is noted that the new X-Double Bar is 5.037 a decrease of .063 and the new R-Bar is now 1.057 which is down .026.
Removing the data for samples 18 for above the UCL for the R-Chart and 19 and 21 for being above the UCL for the X-chart there are some noted differences. Both the X-Double bar and the R-Bar have been lowered meanwhile on the X-chart the UCL and the LCL have slightly tightened up. On the R-chart the UCL and LCL have tightened up also coming down from 2.472 down to 2.413. By removing the samples that were outside the Upper Control limits all of the samples are now with in the acceptable range which brings the process into statistical control even though the Upper Control Limits and the Lower Control Limits have tightened up.

Beta’s dockworkers check the bill of lading against the quantity marked on the boxes, but do not examine the chips. The chips are then put in the back of the warehouse until needed in the plant. The next week, when the chips are sent to the plant and unpacked, Beta’s plant manager discovers that the quality is less than that stated in the parties’ contract. Beta contacts Alpha to inform it of the defect. Does Beta have any remedies? If so, what are they? If not, why not?…

P-charts are used to monitor the process for attribute data. These are typically binomial “go, no-go” data. An example of a P-chart is percent of pieces nonconforming. X-bar charts are used for charting population values for continuous measurement. X-bar charts operate effectively with smaller sample sizes than P-charts, but it is more involved to analyze the sample for an X-bar chart since a measurement must be taken. A rule of thumb for the sample size of a P-chart is to have at least one defective in each sample. This can require a relatively large sample size in some cases. If the process is slow, an X-bar chart will generally be a better choice since it functions with smaller sample sizes. An example of an X-bar chart is average time to complete a mile run for one person. R charts are used to compute process ranges for variable data, and are generally used in concert with X-bar charts.…
