Freshman Year Research Paper
Freshman year is the beginning of all things important and all things new. You move to a new school, you follow new trends, you make new friends. But this year for me meant time for a new backpack. Even in its roughest days of frayed straps and dirt covered bottom, I still loved it. Plus, I hated looking for new backpacks, they were all going to be cheep looking and ugly. They all look the same, usually they had three to four pockets, some had elegant designs and others were dull and colorless. They all lacked the character my bag had rightfully earned. Even the idea of a backpack brings me to the idea of school, and school shopping. While I was anxious about starting freshman year, school was still school, and I didn't look forward to it . Plus, backpack shopping is awful, having to go to the store with loud, bickering customers who obnoxiously try to haggle their way out of prices. Also, the outrageous crying or whining of children, ungrateful kids, who bicker and argue with their parents about what color they wanted their bag. You cant forget the unpleasant music that sounds like I should be waiting in an elevator. The long dreaded trip to the store …show more content…
With my new bag I got some new folders to help my next attempt at straightening up my bag. My sleek new folders, neatly filed into each narrow slot alongside my slick binders. Although my new organization was working well the bag was getting heavier. The more stuff I put in I could only imagine the weight to come. My other bag was very uncomfortable, it pulled and rubbed my skin as it got heavier. That was what I expected when I picked this one up. However, this bag has cushions for a comfortable fit, along with straps to relieve my shoulders from the abrasive material. I still don't love my new bag, but it’s not as worn or as ugly as my old

In the poem titled “The School Children” by Louise Gluck, the author utilizes an industrious tone and the symbol of the apple to establish the understanding that it is hard to maintain individuality in a society where one is expected to conform to the masses. Continuing to conform can only lead to a loss of one’s sense of self. In the first line of the poem, the speaker states, “The children go forward with their little satchels” (Gluck). The term “satchels” is used in this line and is a small bag that usually comes with a shoulder strap. Connotatively, a satchel is something used for more professional purposes, which contradicts the way one would describe children. The speaker specifically said satchel, rather than a backpack or simply a bag which compares the children to professionals rather than young kids. By using the term satchel…
