Kortney went to the fifth grade to the “Hilton School”. Her best friend was Carla. They had known each other since five years old. They were living next to each other. That day Carla’s parents were leaving for the fair and Kortney’s ones. So both girls stayed lane at home. In case adults allowed them to stay together until they were in the countryside. Kortney asked Carla to stay in her house and the girl agreed. Next day after their parents had left Kortney and Carla went to school. The day was usual, nothing seemed to be very interesting and exiting. After school girls came to Kortney’s house. Carla noticed that something was wrong with Kortney. But she did not pay attention on it. Mean while they set to do homework. The time past by it was seven o’clock already. In the refrigerator they found some meatballs, ketchup and French fries for dinner. While having dinner Kortney gave her eye at the armchair in the corner as if somebody was sitting there. Carla watched her movements but didn’t say anything. Later around nine they went to bed. Just after they had said goodnight to each other they heard something fell from the cupboard. The girls alerted. Then Kortney took herself in hands and went downstairs. Carla was scared to stay alone in the room and ran after her. Kortney turned on the lights. Everything was on its places, just the vase’s fragments were lying on the floor. Still there was a question in Carla’s mind. She looked at Kortney, her face didn’t give a sign of a fear or a surprise. That moment she realized she was very close to find out the key to this strange situation.

Boyfriend and girlfriend, or just a platonic relationship, it could have been any of the three, and the scene would have been mirrored in many homes across Rome. They were normal. Or at least, together, they contained a semblance of normality, which to Kyle, was almost as eerie a sensation as was the morning after his first murder to know that the woman across from him, the one who’d have reason to never trust another man, or allow one to touch her ever again, had entrusted him to hold her in his arms as she slept. And held no regrets for having done so, and not just that. She’d also revealed details to him of her life experiences that she doubted to spoken of with such earnestness and honesty to anyone before him, and he’d returned the favour without a second thought. With her eyes closed, and her soft breathing, and the faintest of snores, but no drooling, she’d appeared so serene and peaceful, and the Army veteran hoped that he’d been in same way responsible for the lack of nightmares.…
