In conclusion, the characters in The Things They Carried, exemplifies the realization of war and the effects it may have on an individual. We come to understand the affliction of war as we dissect into the characters Lieutenant Cross, Rat, and O’ Brien. Lieutenant Cross a compassionate individual, has been enrolled in position where he has no experience. Eventually Cross learns the hard way as a member in his platoon is killed and he is forced to carry the guilt. Cross soon adapts to the gruesome reality of war and carries his men to safety.
