English 1301 2014 first essay Frederick Douglass was born supposedly in February of 1895.He believed his father was his owner. He was separated from his mother after birth and lived with his grandmother.
Douglass failed twice to escape from slavery before he met his love Anna murray who was a free slave.This motivated Douglass to escape so he pretended to be a sailor and eventually made his way to New York city. The couple settled in bedford massachusetts where Douglass was involved as a active speaker on anti slavery. He gathered large crowds with his great speaking skills and his point of view stories about his experience with slavery. Douglass feared the publicity he was gaining and decided to tour in Ireland and England for two years.
After returning to the u.s., he published his first newspaper The North star.During the civil war
Douglass convinced the north that ending slavery would be beneficial. Frederick Douglass was able to help change an entire country with the power of literacy. In 1845 Frederick Douglass published “Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass “ which describes Douglass’s struggle to free himself from slavery both mentally and physically. At the age of about eleven douglass hears his masters talking about how they keep slaves uneducated this motivates douglass to learn how to read.Douglass is then sent to Edward
Covey a slave breaker and after a year Douglass loses his motivation to learn and escape.Eventually Douglass decides to stand up to Covey and covey never whips him again.
Douglass is then hired by a kinder master called william freeland.Douglass began to teach his fellow slaves how to read and made plans for his escape.His plans were found out and he was sent back to Baltimore to learn a trade. He became a caulker and saved up a enough money to escape to new york and marry Anna murray.

    Douglass begins by telling us he was born into slavery in Maryland, his mother’s name was Harriet Bailey, and he was separated from her at birth. He reveals he is not sure how old he is and that his father was a white man rumored to be his first master. He was later sent to Baltimore where his new master’s wife began to teach him to read. His Master Hugh found out and put a stop to it insisting Douglass would become unmanageable and unhappy. When Douglass heard this he realized that the lock on the bonds of slavery was ignorance, and education was his key to freedom. Douglass was born into slavery and goes from master to master, and he finally sees the power of education when he reaches Baltimore to work for some new people.     Douglass begins his narrative as far back as he can remember, explaining that shortly after birth he was separated from his mother Harriet Bailey and was never truly sure of who his father was, although everyone suspected it to be his master, Captain Anthony. Douglass eventually changed his name from Fredrick Bailey Douglass to Fredrick Johnson. This simple name change gave more of a confirmation that he doesn’t want to have the past of slavery engraved to his name and that he is the only Master to himself. Fredrick Johnson is a freed man who escaped slavery. As a freed man, Douglass started to attend black abolitionist meetings, and later became a famous anti-slavery speaker.
