The 1845 autobiography, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass provides an elaborate examination of the hardships of slavery. Frederick Douglass' firsthand recounting of the whippings, beatings, and hangings he observed as a slave in the nineteenth century vividly illustrate the poor treatment African American slaves endured in the South. His words, thoughts, and feelings throughout his internment as a slave provides an in depth description of his explanation. Douglass' personal writings about his own survival served as crucial elements to adds momentum to the slavery era.

The corrupt and irresponsible power that slave owners enjoy over their slaves has a detrimental effect on the slave owners' own moral health. With this theme, Douglass completes his overarching depiction of slavery as unnatural for all involved. Douglass describes typical behavior patterns of slaveholders to depict the damaging effects of slavery. He recounts how many slave-owning men have been tempted to adultery and rape, fathering children with their female slaves. Such adultery threatens the unity of the slave owner's family, as the father is forced to either sell or perpetually punish his own child, while the slave owner's wife becomes resentful and cruel. Douglass's main illustration of the corruption of slave owners is Sophia Auld. The irresponsible power of slaveholding transforms Sophia from an idealistic woman to a demon. She changes from a kind, loving, and caring women into a typical mean slave master. It was not rare during the 1800's for women to have no choice, but to obey their husband. This left Sophia no choice; she had to cease teaching Douglass how to read. In the Narrative, another character that plays a very important role is Douglass. He acts as both the narrator and the protagonist, and he appears quite different in these two roles. As the narrator he seems to be very reliable and educated. When his role changes to the protagonist he conveys to the audience that during particular events his status and mentality changed accordingly, which goes back to making him a reliable narrator.
To further depict his battle against slavery, Douglass addresses a variety of people in his audience. The audience that I think he addressing is majority whites to inform them that slavery not only destroyed the mentality of blacks, but also whites. In reading his narrative he focuses on the harsh things whites did to blacks. Yet, he is also making blacks aware of the hardships their ancestors had to

    Frederick Douglass - The author and narrator of the Narrative. Douglass, a rhetorically skilled and spirited man, is a powerful orator for the abolitionist movement. One of his reasons for writing the Narrative is to offer proof to critics who felt that such an articulate and intelligent man could not have once been a slave.     Douglass shows how slavery turns people who are good and kind, into things of pure evil. Douglass shows in his book how slavery is corrupting and changes people, and he shows this through Master Hugh’s wife, Mrs. Auld. Mrs. Auld was a woman who “never had a slave under her control previously to [Douglass],” and “[Douglass] was utterly astonished at her goodness.”(Douglass 19) Douglass shows how she was pure and had a good heart that was in the right place and Douglass compares her to an angel, but the “fatal poison” of slavery was “in her hands,” and she soon her “cheerful eye” because of the “influence of slavery, soon became red with rage” and her “angelic face gave place to that of a demon.”(Douglass 19) Change was inevitable because of her need to conform to the way people treated slaves. According to her husband the way she treated slaves was “unlawful and unsafe,” (Douglass 20) and she needed to treat them like others treat slaves, which she did. She went against her beliefs, and “[conformed] to the patterns of [the] world” (Niv Bible, Rom. 12:2) and treated slaves like dirt.     Through his specific diction, Frederick Douglass is able to exemplify how slavery not only dehumanized slaves, but had an equally horrifying effect on slave owners. When Douglass initially meets Sophie Auld, he describes her as a “pious, warm, and tender-hearted woman” (Douglass 50). Never owning a slave before, Sophie Auld was not accustomed to the typical treatment of slaves, leaving Douglass “utterly astonished at her goodness” (Douglass 46). However, once she is scolded for her kind treatment towards Douglass, most notably for attempting to educate him, by her husband, Douglass describes an extreme change in her character.     While Douglass’s Narrative shows that slavery dehumanizes slaves, it also advances the idea that slavery adversely affects slave owners. Douglass makes this point in previous chapters by showing the damaging self deceptions that slave owners must construct to keep their minds at ease.     Slavery, the dark beast that consumes, devours, and pillages the souls of those who are forced to within its bounds and those who think they are the powerful controllers of this filth they call business. This act is the pinnacle of human ignorance, they use it as the building blocks for their “trade,” and treat these people no more than replaceable property that can be bought, sold, and beaten on a whim. The narrative of Frederick Douglass is a tale about a boy who is coming of age in a world that does not accept him for who he is and it is also told as a horror that depicts what we can only imagine as the tragedies placed on these people in these institutions of slavery. It is understood as a chronicle of his life telling us his story from childhood to manhood and all that is in between, whilst all this is going on he vividly mixes pathological appeals to make us feel for him and all his brethren that share his burden. His narrative is a map from slavery to freedom where he, in the beginning, was a slave of both body and mind. But as the story progresses we see his transformation to becoming a free man both of the law and of the mind. He focuses on emotion and the building up of his character to show us what he over time has become. This primarily serves to make the reader want to follow his cause all the more because of his elegant and intelligent style of mixing appeals. Through his effective use of anecdotes and vivid imagery he shows us his different epiphanies over time, and creates appeals to his character by showing us how he as a person has matured, and his reader’s emotion giving us the ability to feel for his situation in a more real sense. This helps argue that the institution of slavery is a parasitic bug that infects the slave holder with a false sense of power and weakens the slave in both body and spirit.…

    The best way to give someone the idea of an institution’s terrible enormity, is to give them depictions of people who have suffered under it. This is the principle idea of the slave narrative, where former slaves tell their experiences in slavery and how they escaped. As most were written when slavery was still legal, the true purpose of these published accounts is addressed in a myriad of different ways throughout, but sums up to this - to convince the reader, through depictions of abuse and dehumanization, that slavery should not be condoned, for the perpetual abuse and misery the slave must endure is not worth the product.     Douglass begins his narrative as far back as he can remember, explaining that shortly after birth he was separated from his mother Harriet Bailey and was never truly sure of who his father was, although everyone suspected it to be his master, Captain Anthony. Douglass describes the horrible conditions by which slaves were forced to live, including intense labor and exhaustion, meager to no portions of food each day, a few shabby articles of clothing, and the absence of a bed.     I am so glad that I finally have the chance to write you again. Unfortunately, I have been really busy with this new book I am reading. Well, calling it new may be a bit inaccurate. The book is called Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. It is an autobiography by Frederick Douglass that was published in 1845, which makes it over 170 years old. Going into reading this book, I expected it to narrate the atrocities that occurred in the Antebellum Period, but I could not prepare myself for the level of detail that Douglass used. He described rural slave culture on his former home in Talbot County, Maryland as cruel and ruthless, with detailed descriptions of beatings, murder, and even sexual abuse (Douglass 1). He recounts, for instance, how one overseer named Mr. Gore murdered a slave named Demby for not listening to his warning about getting out of a creek. Even after moving to Baltimore, Douglass still encountered abuse in the city. The only difference was that the cruelty was better hidden and rarer.
