Something flew by her. This time, she definitely knew it was a bird, a crow or raven of sort but bigger. Glancing around, Annabeth didn’t see anything but knew that something was there. Another black bird like creature flashed by her face. It left a long scratch down her face. Long but thankfully not very deep or bad. It reminded her of the time she had gotten a paper cut at school, but a lot longer. She looked down at her braclet. A shield, a flashlight, a knife. A shield would might work. Her hand fingered over the red ruby. As the black creature flashed by her face again, she pressed down on it. The eight petal like blades spun out and formed a shield. She heard an unnatural cry and a thunk as the creature hit the shield and fell to the ground. Annabeth slowly and carefully pressed the ruby again. Dismantling the shield back into the silver snake wrapping around her wrist. When she looked down, she saw a bat. Wait a bat? She thought. It was thrashing around on it’s back, as if the creature had lost sense of…

They blinked once. Twice. Three times. And still, the gray walls did not metamorphose into the equally unfamiliar golden blades of grass. Memories dotted her consciousness. Rough hands, heaving her on cold tables. Sharp pricks of pain embedding themselves in her legs, her sides, and her soft belly. All at once, something brought the lumbering wolf to her unsteady paws with a start. The voices flooded her ears, blanketing all of her senses and sending every fur shooting up along her spine. They were here, in this cage. Sure enough, when she breathed in, it was them she smelled. The sickening odor coated her lungs. It was heaved back out immediately, the wild wolf gagging at its taste. Something of acid and stone and blood. As she looked around, however, she found no sign of them in the flesh. Just the evidence they left behind.…

I groan, and try to retreat back into whatever nonsensical dream I was inhabiting. But it’s too late. And I can no longer cling to the last shreds of sleep as my rest is ripped from me harshly by my mum, shouting upstairs. Like a falcon screeching a threatening cry before it strikes its helpless prey, inevitably bringing death. Perhaps more like a song bird giving a warning call before danger arrives. Maybe just like a mother getting real tired of yelling at her “lazy” offspring. I sigh, realising I still haven’t answered and if I don’t soon I’d be suffering a fate worse than the falcon’s prey. I mumble something completely unintelligible and hear my mum stride away from the bottom of the stairs, relieved, either…

Whilst Anya grew up, she dared never to sleep without a source of light. She had begged her parents to watch as she fell asleep at night, scared of the looming shadows stretched across her room. As she grew older her parents had decided that she had outgrown her fears and removed her light, her salvation. Anya begged them over and over not to remove it but her voice fell on deaf ears, her parents reasoning echoed again in her head. “You’ve outgrown it Anya! Just try it…please?” They would always say to calm her worry. However as night fell, she hid under her covers and shook with fear, her mind focused on the shadows that would try and steal her away. At the slightest creak in her room, she screamed terrified. She threw her covers over her and ran for the door, only to be inches away before warm hands reached out and grabbed her. Anya thrashed fruitlessly as her parents voices cut through the darkness. It was only her mother and father, worried for her sake and came to check up on her. As realization hit her, she sobbed bitterly in their arms as they soothed her with calming words. They had decided to allow Anya to have her night light back, in hopes of quelling her fear slowly. For a few fortnights Anya slept soundly and happily with her salvation returned. However within one night, her light flickered slowly then shut off. Anya had been tossing and turning, unable to sleep that very night and her heart nearly stopped as the room flooded with darkness. She whimpered softly, unable to call out to anyone for help. She threw the covers over her face, hoping to find some sanctity, a safe haven, for herself. After what had seemed to be hours,…
