Frank Stockton's Jealousy
Most people have experienced jealousy in their lives. Furthermore, most people have had to live with difficult choices they have made. In the short story, “The Lady or the Tiger” Frank Stockton tells the story of how jealousy and difficult choices lead a princess to condemn her lover to a terrible death. Due to the princess’s barbaric nature and fervid jealousy of the maiden, she directs her lover to the door that contains the tiger. First of all, the princess’s jealousy surfaces when the princess has seen the lady throwing glances at her lover, and her lover returned those glances (6). With this fact, Stockton shows that the princess had a right to be jealous because she had seen her lover return the lady’s glances. Since the lady who has …show more content…
To begin with, the princess has a strong love for the young man and could not bear the thought of seeing him ripped apart by the fangs of the tiger (7). With those words, Stockton implies that her ample love for the young man can lead her to put aside her own feelings to spare him from dying by the jaws of the tiger. The princess loves him so much that she cannot allow her courtier to be killed by a ferocious tier. Second, Stockton writes, “power of quick perception…given to those whose souls are one” to describe the depth of their love and the closeness of their relationship (6). They share a bond which not many young couples are capable of achieving and that fact influenced the princess to signal her lover towards the door of the lady. Since their souls are one, she cannot allow a piece of herself to be murdered by the tiger, she wanted him to be happy so that she could also be happy. The princess’s unbreakable love for the young man and their shared connection are factors that led her to direct him to the door that contains the lady. Jealousy is a feeling that most people have had at some point in their lives. Also, the majority of people have faced the need to make difficult choices, with which they have had to live with. Frank Stockton, in his story “The Lady or the Tiger”, tells how jealousy and a difficult choice

Before I continue, I just wanted to clarify a misconception. Some people get envy confused with jealously. To me, jealously has a negative and dangerous connation. To be jealous means that you have an irrational hate or anger towards a person, because they have something that you would want. Someone who is jealous cannot stand to see a…

The tigers represent a powerful character created by Aunt Jennifer through her needlework, which she uses as an escape. While the tigers move with certainty, "Aunt Jennifer's tigers prance across a screen" (1). Aunt is nervous and afraid: "Aunt Jennifer's fingers fluttering through her wool" (5). Webster's dictionary defines flutter as a condition of nervous agitation. Aunt is agitated and in a hurry to create the image of the tigers to get her mind off of her husband. "Bright topaz denizens of a world of green" (2) creates a feeling of greenery which represents the living surroundings of the jungle where a tiger would be found. Line two shows the reader how Aunt describes the tiger's home, while at the same time Aunt is in her home. The contrast is shown between Aunt Jennifer and the tigers through the attitude of the characters.…

In the very olden time there lived a semi-barbaric king, whose ideas, though somewhat polished and sharpened by the progressiveness of distant Latin neighbors, were still large, florid, and untrammeled, as became the half of him which was barbaric. He was a man of exuberant fancy, and, withal, of an authority so irresistible that, at his will, he turned his varied fancies into facts. He was greatly given to self-communing, and, when he and himself agreed upon anything, the thing was done. When every member of his domestic and political systems moved smoothly in its appointed course, his nature was bland and genial; but, whenever there was a little hitch, and some of his orbs got out of their orbits, he was blander and more genial still, for nothing pleased him so much as to make the crooked straight and crush down uneven places.…

Frank R. Stockton (1834-1902) was an American writer and humorist, best known for his fable "The Lady or the Tiger? (1882), about a man sentenced to an unusual punishment for having a romance with the king 's beloved daughter. Taken to the public arena, he is faced with two doors, behind one of which is a hungry tiger, who will devour him. Behind the other is a beautiful lady-in-waiting, whom he will have to marry, if he finds her. While the crowd waits anxiously for his decision, he sees the princess among the spectators, motioning to him to choose the door on the right. The story ends abruptly there, without telling us whether she was pointing to the door leading to the lady-in-waiting, or whether her jealousy got the better of him and she preferred to see her lover die than to have him marry someone else. The final outcome has been debated in high school literature classes for years. Born in Philadelphia, Stockton was assistant editor of Saint Nicholas Magazine, a magazine for children, until 1881, when he was able to support himself entirely from his writing. His collected work, coming to 23 volumes of stories for adults and children, was published between 1899 and 1904.…

In the short story “The Lady or the Tiger” a man has been caught by the king committing the crime of dating his daughter and is sent to trial. The princess is then faced with a troublesome decision at his trial; to either let her lover be eaten by a voracious tiger or to marry another woman. The author then lets the story off with a cliffhanger and does not let you read what the princess chose, so that is up to the reader. I am here to express my opinion on that topic. In my opinion, I am lead to believe the princess chose the tiger for her lover to be brutally eaten by. Why I am to think this is for four reasons, she was barbaric, she loathed the lady behind the door, she did not think about her answer, and at the moment she was faced with…

The first stanza of the poem introduces the tigers that Aunt Jennifer creates on her pin-needle screen. These tigers are a metaphor for her dreams of being free from wedlock, and become a way for her to create the person she wants to be. The speaker introduces the poem by saying that “Aunt Jennifer’s tigers prance across a [pin-needle] screen” (1), which symbolizes joyful liberty. The majestic tigers she needles occupy a world with nothing but freedom, which is the opposite of her situation. In the third and fourth lines, the speaker mentions that “[the tigers] do not fear the men beneath the tree; / They pace in sleek chivalric certainty” (3/4), which shows that her tigers are brave and unafraid of taking risks, which is the contrary of who she really is. The first two lines of the second stanza show the extent to which Jennifer is weak. The speaker mentions that “[she finds] even the ivory needle hard to pull” (6), which goes to show that she is extremely cowardly due to the fact that she is trapped in marriage. Furthermore, the speaker says that “[the] massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band / Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer’s hand” (7/8), giving the image of a wedding band that resembles shackles, which is a metaphor for marriage oppression. Her bulky wedding band symbolizes the fact that she is downtrodden by her husband to the point that…

The formalism of "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers" hides the more disturbing aspects of the poem and subordinates the theme of Aunt Jennifer's "ordeals" in marriage to the more "poetic" theme of the transcendence of art. The first verse of the poem describes the fearless tigers Aunt Jennifer creates in needlepoint. Their freedom and dignity is contrasted in the second verse to the restrictions of marriage, symbolized by the wedding band that weighs down Aunt Jennifer's fingers as she sews. The themes are resolved in the final, third, verse: Even death will not free Aunt Jennifer from her "ordeals," but the tigers she has created will continue to appear "proud and unafraid."…

The wife from the fable “The Blue Eyes”, by Isak Dinesen, is a lady that is caught up in her jealousy and greed that she is blind to the obvious. For example, the wife in the story is constantly jealous of the figurehead on her husband’s boat, “You think more of the figure-head than of me”, she said to him. “No”, he answered, “I think so highly of her because she is like you, yes, because she is you yourself. Is she not gallant, full-bosomed; does she not dance in the waves, like you at our wedding?” (1). Clearly, the wife is too focused on being the center of attention, and not wanting to share the spotlight with even a figurehead of herself that she cannot see that her husband loves her. This demonstrates that the skipper’s wife is overrun with feelings, compelling her to take the eyes off of the figurehead. Later in the fable, she becomes so envious of the figurehead that she steals the beautiful blue “eyes” from it,…

Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers that does not represent Rich herself as she wrote it as a young woman, but it does represent women at that time. In this poem Rich presents us with the ‘typical marriage’ at that time where women felt constricted by their marriage and felt it was a burden weighing them down ‘The massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band/Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer’s hand.’ Aunt Jennifer was feeling oppressed and afraid ,’her terrified hands’ because her husband was the one who had power over her and the one who made the important decisions making Aunt Jennifer feel insignificant ‘Still ringed with the ordeals she was mastered by.’ Yet the tigers she created have no fear of the human beings and perhaps this was Aunt Jennifer’s desire ,not to fear ‘the men beneath the tree.’ Rich I believe choose the tigers as the symbol of power and freedom to especially show what Aunt Jennifer was thinking deep within and the contrast between Aunt Jennifer and her creation ,the tigers. I believe there is a hope and a wish that the way women are seen will change for future generation ,this is shown at the end of the poem ‘The tigers in the panel that she made/ Will go on prancing ,proud and unafraid.’…
