Framing In The Dark Knight Rises
Directors often use framing to portray a scene or character in a way that provides information to the viewer. Throughout The Dark Knight Rises, (2012), Christopher Nolan uses framing to convey the balance of power between characters of a given scene. This element of cinematography is most evident in shots that feature the villain, Bane. Even though the actor that plays Bane is 5’9”, he appears taller and powerful due Nolan’s use of low angle framing. During the scene in the airplane before Bane parachutes out of the wreckage, Nolan uses a long shot from the perspective of the high-jacked military personnel. In that shot, all of Bane’s body is shown, straddling the plane seats, arms and legs spread wide as he looks down at soldiers below.

With framing includes angles, levels, and height. There are angles such as high angle and low angle. Levels such as canted, tilted , pans, tracks, and dollies. Also height, which is how high the camera is being held. Framing also involves shots such as a birds eye view shot, a shot in which the camera photographs the scene from directly overhead; low angle shot, a shot taken from below the subject; medium close up, a shot taken from the chest up; and extreme close up, a shot that singles out a portion of the face. Of course I missed a lot but I will talk more about framing once I get more in depth with “The Game.”…

Overhead shots are present in the three films. He uses the shot to show how small or vulnerable something might seem. In "Edward Scissorhands", Edward is observed fleeing down the street from the cops showing how vulnerable and fragile he is. In another scene the audience gazes at the pair of normal hands Edward is supposed to have put on, torn and destroyed on the floor, showing how useless and small his chances of having them are. "Big Fish" uses this effect when the character Edward Bloom visits the town of Spectre. Spectre is a tiny and rural town. The shot from above shows the dinky size of the town. Other more subtle techniques used in the visual developments of the film included split screens, accelerating shots, and flipping/flopping shots that contributed to creating stunning visual effects. One of major challenges that the filmmakers faced was the type of lens and angles that would be utilized to shoot the film. Director Branagh ultimately made the controversial decision to use wide-angled lens with “lots of depth”. He utilized these qualities to maximum effect by filming certain scenes with a “tilted angle” due to its “comic-book like” quality. Branagh felt that it was only proper that Thor had some qualities that could be tied back to its origins.…

The film The Dark Knight Rises is very phallocentric and masculine. It also focuses on and uses gothic themes to present and challenge the fears a current age person has in today’s society. Its use of gothic themes creates a setting that helps amplify and enhance these fears. The setting has a gloomy atmosphere, urban decay. A sense of an underworld is created through dark tunnels and hidden secrets, this also gives Gotham City a labyrinthine quality. The film also uses aerial shots of the city, which emphasises the urban landscapes and how a person is very small compared to the city, and also creates a sense of isolation and builds on the sense of a labyrinth. The name Gotham City is a play on the word gothic and further plays on these themes.…

Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns questions what is right and what is wrong. It makes you wonder if the government is the bad guy, or if it is the criminals, or maybe even Batman himself. Miller uses duality and creates closure to show that there is always another side of the coin and all you have to do is flip it to see it. He also uses art to build context and tension by starting with art that is abstract. The art slowly changes to brighter colors and less abstract art as the tension of the plot builds. With the use of an iconic archetypal vigilante seeking justice, Miller also emphasizes the ever-present question of morality.…
