Forgiveness In The Monster Calls
In the morning, Conor's controlling grandmother sent him to school without letting him say

goodbye to his mother, who had a rough night, and that made him feel guilty. On his way to

school, his overly persistent friend (Lily) comes up to him and talks about how she forgives him

for lying and how her mom wants to give him allowances because his mother has cancer, but

Conor does not forgive her because Lily is the one who told her friends about Conor's situation

in the first place. Conor feels so angry that, in his mind, the world gets dark with storms, and

Conor feels like he could rip Lily apart. At school he, like everyday at school, gets bullied by

Harry (who seems to be testing him) at lunch time, but this time Lily does not

After lunch,

Miss Kwan, the principal, talked to him about how her door is always open if he needs someone

to talk to, but he hated hearing that from people. That evening, his grandmother tells him that his

mother is going back to the hospital, he is staying at her house, and his father is coming into

town, which hits him like bricks. In Patrick Ness' book, The Monster Calls, Conor said, "'Dads

coming!'" (75). Conor had not see his father, who lives in America, for two years, so he was

nervous but excited. After his grandmother talk to Conor, he went upstairs to his room where his

mother was. His mother, not really letting him know the truth about what was happening,

reassured him that it was all going to be ok. Five days later, Conor was in his grandmother's

clean yet crowded home, which was much bigger then Conor's, and he had not seen the monster

for five days. Conor does not like his grandmother's house and all of her rules, like no

technology, and one of the rules is that nobody can sit in the sitting room because there is old,

expensive things in that room, like his grandmother's favorite clock. Of course, this is

When he went to visit his mother, his mother

again reassured him that the new medication, made from the yew tree, would help save her.

Conor's dad took him outside to prepare him for the worst, but Conor would not listen, believing

the the yew tree would save his mom.

#2. There is a bitter Apothecary, a person who make old potion from berries, leaves, and bark to

heal people, who lived years ago, and his supplies were running low because of industrialism. He

wanted to cut down a parsons yew tree for its healing power and so his business could prosper.

The parson denied the Apothecary the tree, and the parson preached against the Apothecaries

ways. One day, the parsons daughters got sick, and nothing they did helped. The parson went to

the Apothecary house and pleaded for him to heal his to daughters, but the Apothecary said that

he would not help because the parson gave up his belief; Also, the Apothecary said that belief is

half the healing and that is why he would not help. His two daughters died that night. I think that

the moral of the story is to treat other like you would like to be treated because if the parson

In the beginning of the book, the monster told the story of a prince who wanted to overthrow his step-mother who was the queen. Conor believed that the queen deserved punishment because she was evil, but when the monster explained what had truly happened, it turned out the prince was the one to blame. In the story that the monster told, the queen corresponded with Conor’s grandmother and he was the prince. Conor was bitter, hated his grandmother, and refused to live with her, and in the prince’s case, he hated the queen and could not stand her. Conor only saw the world in black and white and could not be more open minded to his opinions. In the second story, the monster tells the tale of a parson and an Apothecary. The story ends with the monster destroying the parson’s home. The story also ended up differently from what Conor had expected. He had expected the Apothecary to be the villain and not the parson. This time around, Conor acted differently. He and the monster started to act as if they were one and together they destroyed Conor’s grandmother’s sitting room. Conor, thinking it was all a dream, did not realize that he himself had ravaged it all. All of his suppressed negative emotions…

This doctor, Dr. Smith, was increasingly suspicious, as he knew that it was impossible for such an antidote to exist. Just as Charles and Mary were skilled impostors, Dr. Smith was well renowned and extremely knowledgeable in the field of medicine (analogy). He planned to confront and expose the couple’s scheme in Kingsville. Dr. Smith approached the couple, pretending to be a commoner, and asked them several questions about their antidote, including its ingredients and its benefits. Unsatisfied with the answers he received, Dr. Smith decided to buy a vial of the potion himself and analyze its contents. Upon opening the vial, he was revulsed by the potion’s effluvium, yet he proceeded to drink the vial’s contents. Dr. Smith was shocked, when he was able to identify the taste of certain herbs in the antidote. He immediately revealed his true identity as a doctor and accused Charles and Mary of falsely selling a cure, which consisted of nothing but foul-smelling herbs. Because of his truculent nature, Charles began to argue with the doctor. However, when Dr. Smith threatened to have Charles and Mary arrested, the couple showed contrite for their actions and apologized to both the doctor and the townspeople. Furthermore, they returned the money they had earned from their scheme and were forced to, once again, return to their lives…

The kids instantly found an attachment to Conor, because of how nice he was and also because of all the change he wanted to bring.
