Forgiveness In Dantes Inferno
Dante talks to many souls while he is in hell. None of which repent for their sins. All of the souls in hell are being punished so if any of them do repent it cannot be known if it is genuine or not because they are being tortured, and for repentance to be repentance it has to be for the love of God. Repentance is not a turning to God to gain forgiveness. Repentance is not a turning to God to avoid punishment. Repentance has is asking for forgiveness from God because of the love that one has for God and because they are truly sorry.
First there is a soul that was the Guardian of Fredrick’s heart. Which means a guard for Fredrick II a Holy Roman Emperor. He did something wrong and many people including Fredrick despised him and then he ended up killing himself to avoid be hated by these people. He tells Dante that the whole time he never lost his love for the lord. “My spirt, relishing the taste of scorn, thinking that I could flee the scorn in death, made me against myself, though just, unjust. By the bizarre roots of this tree I swear I never broke the faith I owed my lord, so worthy to be honored by all men.” In this the man is saying that he still loved the lord. The difference between man and beast is that man is a rational creature. In being a rational creatures we have the ability to think about our past actions and if they right or wrong. This makes man think about the things that he has done. This shapes man by making who the man is defined by what he has done. This also can help define if the man is a good or bad person. Man being able to repent for his actions this helps man realize what he has done and be sorry for it.
