Forest Gump
The 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s were a very important decades in American history. In the 1950s, there was the start of the Korean War, and many families were moving out of the cites and into the suburbs. The 1960’s were all about fighting for equality and brought a man to the moon. During the 1970’s the cold war was really taking its toll but the United States pulled out of the Vietnam War, and president Nixon resigned. In 1980, Ronald Reagan won the presidency over Jimmy Carter and although the cold war tensions were high laissez fair economics were introduced. No movie better exemplifies what happened in each of these decades better than Forrest Gump. This movie is filled with historical events and presents them in an exciting and entertaining way. In the movie Tom Hanks plays a man named Forrest Gump who finds himself in a variety of historical events that he can’t quite understand. He meets many famous people along the way; for example he taught Elvis Presley to dance, John Lennon was one of the guests on the show he appeared on, Forrest met three American Presidents, and was in the Vietnam War, where he received a Medal of Honor. He unknowingly was brought into an anti-war demonstration, where he made a simple speech and found his lost love, Jenny among the hundreds of protestors. He was the person who discovered The Watergate Scandal and Forest started trends like smiley faces. Forest Gump always seemed to be in the right place at the right time to make his mark in history. There is an excellent cast that follows Tom Hanks which includes Robin Wright Penn as Jenny, Forrest's lifetime love; Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan; Mykelti Williamson as Bubba, Forrest’s best friend who was a shrimp catching lover; and Sally Fields as his amazing mother.
This movie allowed many of its viewers to get a real glimpse into the events that were occurring in the time periods from the 1950s through the 1980. I thought that Forrest Gump was a very

Watching the movie Forest Gump for the first time, it was difficult to categorize. Was it a drama? Was it s Comedy? Was it a war film? Was it a historical film? It really fit into all of those categories. It was an unconventional film about the history of America over 30 years, seen through the eyes of a mentally challenged man with an IQ below 65. It was a modern fable, a dreamlike fairy tale, on how to live one’s own life to the fullest. The movie was enhanced greatly by the use of voice-over narration. Forrest (Tom Hanks) participated in the action of the story, but also acted as the narrator. In the background of the narration, soft music was playing at times. The movie Forrest Gump, was filled with much detailed, essential information and multiple twists. There was not a visual way through action to advance the plot or characters through action. Voice-over narration was used, which allowed me to go inside the experience of the characters. Much of the movie’s humor came from Forrest’s voice-over narration. The story was narrated from a bus-stop bench by Forrest. The narration was in a third-person view, with what sounded like an Alabama accent. Forest unwittingly simplified major historical events and sometimes got them wrong. An example was when Forrest described the Ku Klux Klan. He described how they would dress up in bed sheets and ride around on their horses, acting like a bunch of ghosts or spooks. The voice of Forrest had a neutral tone to it. It allowed me to see Forrest’s side, but also allowed me to draw my own opinion. There was a scene in the movie where Forrest breaks out of his leg braces as he ran away from a pack of bullies. Forrest was clear in his narration, and never lost focus despite the intense action taking place in the scene. There was another scene in the movie where…

    Letters Home from Vietnam

The powerful emotions triggered through watching this film can be acknowledged without question. What I found the most interesting was the use of real news footage from that time period that aired on major news networks, swaying people’s opinions about our justification for being in Vietnam. Being able to view that gave me a 1st hand look into soldiers’ opinions of the war as well as protests and how they differed then. The actors reading the leaders with pure emotion and feeling in order to accurately portray how much these soldiers put into these letters was remarkable because I felt as though I was experiencing that time period as if it were real and the soldiers were scrambling to write as I watched on. The stories they depicted throughout their words definitely provided for a flurry of reactions. I wanted to be happy for those men honored for combat, living through the horrors of hell, and seeing the relief on their faces when being honorably discharged and sent home. I was equally and oppositely somber, however, for those men’s lives stolen in combat, for those permanently crippled and bitter, to hear of the unspeakable horrors awaiting prisoners of war, as well as letters from optimistic soldiers killed in action shortly after. Another thing I found effectively executed by this film was the specific numbers given. They showed the variation in the number of soldiers deployed to Vietnam over the course of the war, as well as the rising KIA numbers and wounded in combat. A gruesome part of this war as well was the thick jungle that the soldiers had to navigate through blindly until ambushed by the Vietcong, and I thought the film did an excellent job of revealing that to the public. One of the most powerful moments of the film was when a soldier, grieving over his superior officer exclaimed that “he’ll be given a silver star, and somehow that is supposed to suffice for his life being…

I choose Forrest Gump as a historical movie. The movie was about a young man with a mental disability that goes through this major event in the 1960 – 1970s not only that but it was kind of romantic. Though out the entire movie, Forrest seems to be going along with the time line in his life looking for his first true love Jenny. Mean while she is living it out as a hippie tagging along with the wrong crowd and as for Forrest he maintains hope that one day she will love him. Not only that but the events that he lived in leads him to become a war hero and a billionaire. In the end he realize that life keeps on going as a “destiny or floating alike a breeze”.…
