Addressing Learning Outcome #4 as Part of the Comprehensive Final The role that scientific discoveries had on influencing personal and societal perspectives in our world are very significant and also very useful in today’s society. My first example of a scientific discovery that played a large role in today’s blood type classification is the discovery of the ABO system by Dr. Karl Landsteiner. Dr. Karl Landsteiner discovered or found the idea that blood can be grouped together into corresponding categories. These groups are classified as A, B, AB, or O. Moving onto the role that Dr. Karl Landsteiner and his ABO system had on influencing societal perspectives. Before the discovery of classifying blood into four categories, A-B-AB-O, blood transfusions were very difficult and highly dangerous. Moreover, what ended up happening was when the transfusion didn’t work, the blood would clot and end up killing the transfusion recipient. …show more content…
Karl Landsteiner and his ABO system had on influencing my personal perspectives is very beneficial to me. The classification of the blood types influenced me personally because now I know my blood type and what type of blood I can receive and who I can give my blood (be a donor) due to the certain blood antigens and antibodies. This is all thanks to the discovery of Dr. Karl Landsteiner. The second example of a scientific discovery that had a big role in connecting a criminal to a crime scene due to the exchange of materials between the two objects, is the discovery of the Locard’s exchange principle which was discovered by Edmond Locard. The Locard’s exchange principle, “is when a person comes in contact with an object or person, a cross transfer of materials occurs” (Saferstein p.9, 2018). In other words, when a person touches something or someone – that person more than likely exchanged his or her DNA to the surface that the person
