This story is very insightful, the author uses strong symbolic language. For an example they said “For the night-wind has a dismal trick of wandering round and round a building”. This quote presents personification at a simplistic level. The author uses higher level vocabulary, but it is written in a simple sentence. The majority of this story is written in complex sentences, yet it is not difficult to find simplicity with in it. They used a lot of strong symbolic language for an example the author said “Heaven preserve us, sitting snugly round the fire!”, this specific quote stood out because I feel as it could be interpreted in many ways by different people. I think the use of the word stealthily was a good choice of advanced language. Some interesting punctuation I saw was when the author said “There are not many people – and as it is desirable that a storyteller and a story-reader should establish a mutual understanding as soon as possible” I think the m-dash was a unique choice to use for punctuation. Personally if I wrote it I would have rewrote the sentence and used a comma. I think a lot of the personification can be linked to imagery, it says “ For the night-wind has a dismal trick of wandering round and round a building of that sort” the personification in this quote helps me imagine what the wind was like.
