Football Helmet Safety
Football Helmet Safety History, science, momentum, present and future. The NFL may be the most dangerous sport to play in the United States. I mean, where else do two people that can run at speeds of 30 miles an hour, hit each other head on going full speed? Nowhere. The game of football, especially at the higher levels, is becoming increasingly dangerous as the athletes keep getting bigger, faster, and stronger. Until a couple years ago the research of concussion and helmet safety have both been on hold.
The league has been around for a long time and the safety regulations have improved drastically. In the 1920’s all the way through the 1940’s the game of football was played with forms of leather helmets. These styles of head protectors provided almost zero percent increase in head protection. Finally in the 50’s and 60’s the recognizable plastic helmet was introduced. The real breakthrough was when the company Riddell appeared in the 70’s. They added air in the padded helmets to reduce impact. Riddell has been the leader in helmet safety ever since. Through the 2000s and the present there have been helmets made specifically to reduce the chances of getting a concussion. Concussion research was practically unknown and frowned upon until recently. Over the past couple of years the NFL has cracked down on head injuries and have put in place new rules/ regulations to prevent them. There has been a ton of research done on head injuries and helmets. Basically, researchers have found that the problem is getting the helmet to absorb the impact given to the helmet. There needs to be material that can do this while not having very much of it at all. The concussions are cause when the helmet is hit, and the head is smacked to the other side of the helmet. The momentum and transferring of the momentum of the hitting player to the receiving player’s brain is what needs to be reduced. Either before the momentum hits the head/brain, or the head/brain needs to have a

The average tackle football player has a natural tendency to experience fear and tension when thinking about the heavy rate of concussion injuries within the sport. In response to the violently physical nature of the game, Riddell Sports has produced a helmet that provides the best defense to worries and consequences of a concussion. The Riddell Revolution 360 football helmet has been constructed by engineers to protect the mental processes and safety of players. As a football player myself, I can think of no better alternative for head trauma prevention than this helmet. Riddell takes into account and states that players sustain roughly 950 impacts to the head over the course of a season. As a result of this, the helmet places a strong emphasis on protection of the most impacted part of the head, the front. Patented in 2012, HIT technology was established by Riddell in their experiment labs to measure the severity and location of head impacts from all directions. This technology proves that detrimental impact to the brain can go unnoticed or misunderstood, and use it to prevent future mental problems for players. This product changes the way participants feel comfortable and confident on the playing field more than ever before. The technology that is added includes a new carbon steel facemask that flexes in reaction to impact. Also added to the helmet was a new face frame structure which is made up of continuous hexagonal shaped padding on the interior that shapes to players heads for a custom and tight fit. This is important for reducing the amount of force to the head, which will allow the sport to be more commonly tolerated by everyone interested. With the rise of cognitive damage in football due to head trauma, parents are more hesitant than ever to allow their children play the game at a young age. However, parents can be assured that the expanded technology in the Riddell 360 will protect their children like never before.…

POW!! CRACK!! I just attempted to deliver a key block on a 240lb linebacker in order for my quarterback to score a touchdown. Our helmets collided. I was dizzy, the lights got brighter, and my head was pounding; I could have sworn I had a concussion. On the sideline a teammate said I’d be fine and that I was going to have the game of a lifetime. I strapped my helmet back up and went back onto the field. I actually did have that game of lifetime, but at what cost? The football helmet is associated with strength and toughness, and so are the men who wear them. The helmet is not there to protect strength and toughness; it is there to protect something much more fragile- the brain. Can the technology of the helmets keep up with each generation of bigger, faster, and harder hitting players and prevent concussions?…

Everyone thinks the main causes of the recent incline of concussions in football today are because players are hitting too hard, yes and no. A concussion can become more severe if it isn’t noticed during the play it happened. It can become worse if the player isn’t tested for it and taken out of the game. Another thing that can cause concussions is when a defensive player launches his whole body towards the head of the offensive player with the ball and hit helmet to helmet. The force behind your body and the hit make a concussion at high percentage chance to occur. A hard hit can be made safe if you hit low, don’t launch your body, and wrap up the ball handler and drive your feet. Also, one more way to get a concussion is switching with someone on the field and not having your chin strap snapped on and getting hit or making the hit. That is not just dangerous but against the rules.…

When watching a football everyone looks out for the “Big Hit” but what people don’t look out for is the after math of these so called big hits, which a lot of the time leads to concussions. These concussions are becoming much more severe and there is a lot of concern about the safety of players who attain multiple concussions, not because of the immediate problems it might bring but the future toll that it could take on the athlete’s brain and body. The feelings of dizziness, headache or short loss of memory at the moment may not seem so dramatic at that point in time In some instances a player will attain a concussion but won’t alert anyone because they fear being benched but don’t realize the real danger that they are making themselves susceptible to in the long run. For these reasons, the NFL office officials are carefully changing rules and regulations to keep these players safe from possible concussions and head trauma. Concussions in the NFL are at an all-time high which is not a positive sign for these current athletes who attain multiple concussions because of long term symptoms such as Alzheimer’s, depression, and possibly brain damage.…

There is no absolute way to prevent a concussion but the National Football League is making new rules and training their referees in ways to help prevent a concussion in their players. “The league donated $1 million to Boston University's Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy research into the long-term effects of repetitive brain trauma in athletes, particularly in football players. The NFL was the first sports league to financially support that research at the school,” (Farmer par. 26). They are funding money to research facilities and researchers to help find a better way to prevent or reduce the causes and effects of concussions. They are doing more than just research but they are also getting their referees training to watch for head-on collisions and players showing symptoms of a concussion. “NFL referees will take on more responsibility this season to protect players from helmet-first hits to their heads and necks,” (NFL.com Wire par. 1). Not only are they watching for head on hits but also…

But actually, the NFL , back then, did not know enough about concussions so they were afraid of them ,but now officials are changing the rules just like they are in youth football. The NFL is making changes because now they have a lot of knowledge about concussions. With this knowledge, officials are making the game safer and are encouraging youth football leagues to do the same. NFL fans wanted to make a change and reduce hard hits. Recently, the league has been listening to their fans like for example, the league moved the kickoff team to start on the thirty five yard line so players were less likely to get hit hard. To fight off the forceful hit, most players prepare for the collision by curling themselves over the ball, to make sure they do not fumble. As a result of protecting the ball their head becomes in the direct line for the impact with the other player. A preliminary study conducted by helmet maker, Riddell, shows that 61% of game concussions results from helmet-to-helmet hits (Vergano). When deciding to become a football player there was an obvious concern for player’s knees and shoulders but now the attention is being placed on the injuries that you cannot always see, brain injuries. This is where the rules of the game are beginning to be…

Football over the Years Everything changes over time, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, and others you can’t really tell it has changed at all but in football you can easily tell the changes it has been through over the years. While all sports have changed over the years football seems to have changed the most dramatically from rules, equipment, stadium and even in the way we watch football today. When American football was born it was an all-white sport played with hardly no equipment for protection except for a leather helmet to protect your head, the game was played on hard dirt and as you can expect, injuries were constant and some deaths even occurred from the brutal hits and the missing component of protection equipment.…
