Jack is the most effective leader in Lord of the Flies because he has gotten the most results when following through with plans. The boys on the island listen to him and do what he says without question, even if it is harsh. He isn’t afraid to be blunt with the boys and believes he is the strongest one there, even though he was not voted chief. Jack’s arrogant and hostile personality makes the other boys feel intimidated to follow his commands. This is apparent when Jack orders the boys to start collecting leaves, sticks, and dried wood to help create the fire: “All at once the crowd swayed toward the island and was gone--- following Jack. Even the tiny children went and did their best among the leaves and broken branches” (Golding 38). In…

“His first words were a gasp, but audible. ‘-Calling an assembly’.” A good leader is someone who is fair, organized, can plan, has patience, and has stoicism. Ralph in Lord of the Flies by William Golding exemplifies these qualities of a leader. A leader is important because without them the group of boys may not have found each other in the beginning of the book and would not have worked together to make shelter and find food. Without a leader, assuming the boys still met, the group would have been in utter chaos. A leader is one who can keep the group together and has the groups’ best interest in mind at all times. By allowing everyone to keep their freedoms, having necessary tasks completed, and giving security Ralph was proven a successful…

At the beginning of the novel Ralph is elected to be the leader of their tribe by majority vote. His main objective is to get the boys rescued as soon as possible, such as when he is suggest a signal fire so passing ships will see them. His leadership position also gives him the authority to summon the boys for meeting by blowing into the conch shell. But although he has the ability to call the boys, and he furnishes several intelligent and practical ideas on how to survive on this island, he does not have the power to enforce their participation. He says, “I bet if I blew the conch this minute, they’d come running…When the meeting was over they’d work for five minutes, then wander off or go hunting.” This was a very influential factor in the power steadily being given to Jack. Ralph sees Jack as a threat to his current chief position because he draws the savage out of the boys by taking them hunting. Jack is infatuated with killing and hunting, and…

One of the cadets, Piggy, found a Conch in the ocean and figured out a way to make a horn from it. When everyone heard the sound of the horn they came running to the origin of the sound. This was the first norm that was established in this group (Galanes & Adams, 2011, pg. 100). They took this opportunity to have a meeting. The cadets started to discuss what they will do to survive. During the meeting the group wanted to elect a leader. It seemed that Colonel Ralph was already a designated leader (Galanes & Adams, 2011, pg.257) and Jack became an emergent leader (Galanes & Adams, 2011, pg. 257). Jack had a charismatic leadership style initially. The kids started to explore the island and Ralph…

Jack was extremely angry that he lost and believed he deserved to be the leader. It was even embarassing to him because Ralph, who beat him out for being the leader, wasn’t even interested in winning. Jack became obsessed in having power over the tribe that he was ready to go great lengths to get what he wanted. He made some boys on the island feel like outsiders in order to get the tribe on his side. This is an example why competition is a main reason why there was a greed to have…

Ralph takes on the role as the adult on the island as there is none. He constantly thinks of survival, having fire, and building shelter because he is concerned about everyone's safety, “Been working for days now. And look!” (50). He’s been working on the shelters with the other boys, but then soon tire and leave him with Simon to finish the shelter. He tries to make sure a fire is always burning, constantly thinking ahead for warmth, cooking food and the possibility of rescue. Jack is a problem, he is becoming more and more barbaric, never thinking things through or supporting others, selfish and unworthy for chief, “He isn’t a proper chief” (126). Ralph would like for everyone on the island to be in one tribe so they can all help each other using all of their strengths, some are better at building shelter, others are better at hunting. Jack does not agree and resists that idea, stealing their food and making their lives even more difficult. Jack is making Ralph’s life unbearable, but Ralph perseveres to be a leader on the…

When you have a leader without any morals and will go to the extreme for their people to obey them, fear is created within their followers. This is the approach that Jack took to lead his group of followers. He lead the group with an iron fist, which created fear within them. As said in The Prince by Niccoló Machiavelli, it is better to be feared than loved. When you are feared as a leader, your followers will do anything that you say, because they fear the consequences. When you're a leader like Ralph who rules with a moral character, people will take advantage of you and will not listen to you. For example, when Ralph needed help building shelters, nobody helped him except for Simon, while the others were hunting or playing around. Also, when Ralph told Jack to keep the fire going, Jack and his hunters disobeyed because they believed it was more important to hunt the pigs instead of keeping the fire going. After a while, the boys on the island started to disregard what Ralph would say, even though it was for them to survive on the island. While people ignored Ralph, they were listening to Jack because they feared him. Since Jack had a more aggressive and fearful character, he held more authority than Ralph, who had a more relaxed and kind character who lost his…

The constant battle for power leads to a debacle in their group on the island. Struggle for power in the beginning of Lord of the Flies is mainly between Jack and Ralph. Golding demonstrates this when Jack says “I ought to be chief because, I’m chapter chorister and head boy,” (14). This shows that Jack is determined to be the leader no matter what everyone else says and therefore showing his character as being very controlling. As a result, the boys vote Ralph to be chief which makes him lead in a more reliable way. Now Ralph portrays a good example of a true leader. He demonstrates his brave and good leadership skills when he says “I’m chief. I’ll go. Don’t argue…You. Hide here. Wait for me” (114). This quote gives us a good example of the willingness Ralph is to protect his tribe and it also shows us the good leadership skills Ralph has. Jack is very determined to steal the leadership from Ralph and continues to do so throughout the novel. A specific event showing this is when Jack says “He’s not a hunter. He’d never got us meat. He isn’t perfect and we don’t know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey him for nothing” (140). This quote gives a good indication of how Ralph and Jack go back and forth. Jack and Ralph both want different things, which cause them to disagree almost on everything.…

First, I learned that you have to work hard to get where you want to be. It is very hard work to be a leader and you have to be persistent. However not everyone is meant to be a leader. People should be aware of this and choose leaders for their wisdom and whether or not they attend to the needs of the people rather than choosing leaders on charisma alone. Someone might display the qualities of being a leader but be lacking in other respects. In the case of Lord of the Flies, while Jack had experience being a leader he was unfit and unable to put first things first on the island. He also did not care for the wellbeing of the other boys. While Ralph was able to maintain a democracy, Jack did not consider the needs of the group as a whole. Something important I have learned from both Robert and Lord of the Flies, is that in order to be a good leader, you must model behaviors you want others to follow and lead by example. For example, towards the end of the novel, Ralph began behaving like the other boys and playing their uncivilized games. He was no longer modeling the behavior he wanted the other boys to follow. The most important thing I have learned, however, is that in any leadership position, it is important to consider the entire team, be hardworking, and be responsible for your actions and the actions of your group. With these core values, a leader can reach their fullest…

There are a lot of qualities a leader has, and that is what makes that person a leader in the first place. One of the most important things for me in being a leader is Honesty. The platform of any relationship, both personal and professional, is honesty. People want to work for a leader they can trust, a leader that has morals, values, and integrity. They want to work for a person that offers a great product or service they can believe in, and that has an honorable reputation. Two of the greatest leaders for me are Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Junior. Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest Presidents to ever lead a country, and he didn’t achieve his success and earn that nickname by being dishonest. Martin Luther King fought for the rights of the black people with peaceful protest and with honesty. People want to feel good about the person they follow or look up to. it’s important to establish core values for both the people are trying to lead for good examples, and yourself as a leader, and to then live and lead by those values as an example to your employees, and also random people on a day to day basis. Without honesty it is hard for people to relate or believe in you and things you tell them. Honesty should be your main foundation and when honesty is built then people can trust and rely on you to do the right things. When things go wrong and you’re honest with people, even though you’re wrong they would understand and still support you because you were honest with them to begin with. To be a great leader you have to have people that would be there to support you and follow you. And with honesty you can be able to achieve and strive to be a great leader.…
