INTRODUCTION Calyx and Corolla (C&C) is a company started by a entrepreneur, Ruth, M. Owades in 1988 which delivers flowers to the end customers using the courier service provided by Fed ex. Customers are provided with an option to order fresh flower and bouquets from a four-color catalogue by placing an order to the company, which also shows floral bouquets, plants, preserved designs, and corporate gifts. The fresh flower order goes immediately to one of 30 growers in the C&C network, who picks and packages the flower and ships them via FedEx. The flowers arrive fresher and last about 10 days longer than flower ordered from stores-best retailers. The credit for such an efficient value chain goes to the sophisticated system and C&C strong alliances with FedEx and the grower. Calyx & Corolla was primarily a mail order company, but management is now considering expanding their market and is unsure of how they should proceed. FTD1 florist network is one of the major competitors of Calyx & Corolla which has a member owned worldwide co operative of 25000 florists2. The calyx & Corolla top management team has exceptionally talented members like Owades and Lee but the things that the company is concentrating upon is that of the future strategy of the company to tackle various externalities faced by the company in future due to arrival of IT as a very strong medium. Again to capture significant market share they will have to spend specific amounts on the advertisement therefore it will have to assess the financial implications of spending heavily on the advertisements. Moreover what should be the strategy to advertise is also an issue because the catalogue medium was already fetching results then would it be safe getting into aggressive indirect advertising. VALUE CHAIN Before Calyx & Corolla: The industry was highly…

Calyx and Corolla is a new company in the fresh flowers market. They have pioneered the concept of selling fresh flowers by mail. In its short lifetime, C&C has established strong relationships with many large growers, who cut flowers when ordered, thereby increasing the life of the buds tremendously over typical florist shops whose buds may already be a week old when purchased. They have also developed a strong relationship with Federal Express, who is their primary distributor. Federal Express has a well-established brand name, known for speedy, on-time, and reliable delivery, giving C&C’s promise fro freshly…

In contrast, C&C’s supply chain given below essentially deleted several non-value added steps, and in doing so, provided fresh flowers to the consumer at a comparable price. From the time they were cut, C&C customers received flowers 7-10 days earlier compared to purchasing them at the typical florist. In doing so, C&C was able to achieve incredible gross margins of over 80% of sales.…

    2. Increasing Mass media Advertising, allows Calyx Flowers to tap into the market share of the other leading Floral Companies like FTD which primarily does Mass Media Advertising to advertise its products . Since Calyx flowers ships flowers to the customer directly from the grower, the customer can be rest assured that the flowers shipped from the Calyx warehouse appear to be the same as the flowers displayed on Calyx’s website, unlike FTD which cannot guarantee the flowers delivered to the recipient are the same as they appear on the floral magazine, since orders through FTD are forwarded to different florists depending on the recipient’s location. This tactic of “predictability” would be attractive to FTD customers who would want to switch to Calyx Flowers.…

Mr. Gilbert, CEO of the Vermont Teddy Bear Company is going to choose a strategy for Calyx Flowers, one of its subsidiaries, in order to reach the full financial performance. There are three possible options proposed by marketing team: ‘Increase the number of catalogs’, ‘Increase mass-media advertising’ and ‘Increase Internet advertising’ I strongly recommend that Calyx Flowers choose ‘Increase Internet advertising’ option. I believe this option could not only be compatible with the company’s communication strategy and tactic but also maximize the purchase with the limited budget.…

While we have gross margins of 50%, and a premium product compared to our competitors, we do not reach full revenue potential. We have a desirable return on direct mail from current customers, but our returns from rented lists are low. Because our current customers are seasonal, and will most likely not increase annual number of purchases substantially, the growth potential of our current customer mail lists is low. We are stagnating, just pitching to our old customers, and not reaching our growth potential. To achieve full potential, we need to reduce the awareness gap; few consumers recognize the premium value of Calyx Flowers or even recognize the brand. Our new strategy should focus on educating potential consumers about the premium value of Calyx.…
