Journal: Find your FIRM (20 points)
FIRM Panel 3710780800J There was nothing on the FEMA site, but I just got a flash flood warning on my phone. We have had rain almost everyday for a month, and the red clay dirt does not absorb the water quickly and the water table is already high. As you can see our flood risks come from seasonal rains.

Journal: Porous Rocks (20 points)
How did the two glasses compare in their final water level? The water level in the glass with the pumice stone decreased. The glass with the rock from outside stayed the same. If one or both of the glasses had a drop in water level, where did the water go? The water is inside the pumice stone air spaces, like a sponge. Recall that an aquifer is a layer of rock that holds groundwater. What types of rocks do you think are best for storing groundwater? Porous rocks, because they have the air spaces to store the water.

Journal: KWL Groundwater (20 points) What I know. It is water in the ground. wells use groundwater. Groundwater makes caves. What I want to know. Where it comes from. Why it stays in the ground. What I learned. groundwater is stored in aquifers. Groundwater comes from precipitation percolating through the layers of earth until it is stopped by an impermeable layer. groundwater contains dissolved minerals. How water moves through the ground is determined by porosity and permeability. The recharge area is uphill from the discharge area. Geysers use groundwater near magma.

As the water falls to the Earth, some of it falls onto the land. Some of the water seeps into the ground and enters underground caves, rocks with small pores and is often stored there. This water in under ground is called ground water. Ground water may stay in the Earth for hundreds to thousands of…

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a Federal operated program run by FEMA that was “created by Congress to mitigate future flood losses nationwide through sound, community-enforced building and zoning ordinances and to provide access to affordable, federally backed flood insurance protection for property owners” (DHS, 2011, 1). There is a lot of risk associated with development of land for commercial and or residential use. There areas could be in zones that are known to flood periodically, so flood mitigation plans and strategies must be developed and enforced this will eventually save money in the long run. According to Kerjan, “the program is responsible for several key functions: developing the flood maps, establishing the…

Flooding has been a continual issue since the first settlers arrived in America. Using methods to deter and/or collect water protects the communities living in that area, but proper maintenance to those barriers must be ensured. Without proper maintenance to these infrastructures, levees can break, dams can crack or collapse leaving disaster behind. Hurricane Katrina’s faulty levees reveal the extreme consequences of neglecting these protectors in places where people depend on them (Wenger, 247). There were many devastating disasters that prompted new analysis and evaluation on flooding conditions and methods to reduce damage and cost. Flood insurance was established for areas that are located within the floodplain (302), as well as the…

The stimuli for my devised piece is ‘Machinal’ written by American playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell and premiered on Broadway in 1928. Treadwell wrote the play based on the true events that unravelled around New Yorker Ruth Snyder who killed her husband in her unhappy marriage and was executed by electric chair; Ruth was the first woman to be executed by electric chair since 1899 which provoked the significance of her story. Treadwell explores the themes of isolation, oppression and female objectification all of which I took on board and intend to include in my devised piece.…

As this hurricane season in Florida is supposed to be the strongest in four years, the treat of inland flooding increases. The biggest threat for coastal buildings is wave run up. High winds in storms pushes much water than usual on beaches, which is called a surge. On top of the high water, waves crash into land causing the wave run up. The reason this problem is becoming more serious is the Earth is getting warmer. Barrior reefs in the ocean act as the first line of defense for these surges. They cut down the wave so by the time it reaches land it is not as powerful. The warmer oceans are killing the coral that makes up the reef, therefore, making the reff less effective in slowing down a wave. The warming of the Earth is threating coastal…
