Las Vegas seems to be one of the safest major cities when it comes to the threat of a major natural disaster, but still the city suffers from one of the most common natural hazards quite often. One of the major natural events or extreme weather that happens in Las Vegas is monsoons and flash flooding. A few times a year, there are flash floods where the rain seem to come out of nowhere and water builds up in some areas very quickly. Flash flooding is something that will be experienced in the future as it happens yearly. Another very common natural hazard that is experienced in Las Vegas is extreme heat. Nevada is one of the worst states for extreme heat along with California and Arizona. Prolonged heat exposure can lead to health risks, such as heat stroke, and even death. High temperatures have happened in the past, and will definitely happen in the future. One other natural event that could potentially happen in the future is an earthquake. Nevada is a seismically active state due to its proximity to California, and since every state is prone to earthquakes, it makes sense that Nevada and therefore Las Vegas could be at risk. These events are all identified and well mapped by FEMA, USGS, and NOAA. By far I would have to say the most likely disaster to befall Las Vegas is flooding.
