Five Year In High School Essay
The ability and developmental levels of the students in the traditional five and four year kindergarten are diverse. Many of my five year old students were a part of the four year old kindergarten program last year and have different backgrounds in English Language Arts and in math. Students whose first year in school is this year have little to no background knowledge in the areas of Language Arts and math. Some of my four year old students have had no experience in a school setting. While other four year old, have been in daycare before attending a public school. When testing my five year old students on letter identification nine of my students scored a stanine of 9, two scored a stanine of 8, one scored a stanine of 7, one scored a stanine of 6, three scored a stanine of 5, and four scored a stanine of 2. …show more content…
These students can copy the letter once shown to them. Four out of the five year old students are struggling on writing letters, but they can trace over the letters once writing for them. When testing my four year old students on letter identification two students knew over forty letters. Three students knew less than twelve letters. When testing the four year olds on writing their name three of them were able to write their first name, but did not know how to write their last name. Based on her letter naming subtest, Brianna is struggling with initial and final consonants.     The first assessment given was the Word Recognition Test using a flash and untimed version. The flash version of the assessment was conducted in the same manner of Dr. Bear (Laureate Education, Inc., 2009a) by using index cards to cover the words and moving the cards to quickly show the student the word to be read. This particular student achieved 45% accuracy on the preprimer words and 70% on the same list when untimed. The student showed a 35% increase in word recognition when he was given time to look at the word and sound it out.     Once they moved into intervention two they would start with the same chalkboard procedure but the worksheet would be different. In this intervention the letter was not written for them or highlighted but instead it was just only written in the instructions. The smiley face was still included on this worksheet as well. During intervention three the chalkboard procedure was given and then the worksheet. On this worksheet only the smiley face was given on the sheet and the students were told which letter to write on the paper. In the final intervention the students completed the chalkboard procedure and on the worksheet they were given it was only a box for them to write the letter in. They were told which letter to write and they had to complete this with no smiley face being on the paper in the corner.
