Reflection Paper #1
The content of the worship is very different from the way I am used to in Islamic mosques. The priests started by saying “We bless ourselves for prayer in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit” and the crowd responded with an Amen, and then a person started to read from the bible. Every time the priest or the person finished the reading, people said “The word of the Lord.” People kept repeating what the priest was saying until he started to read the Gospel. When he stared reading the Gospel, people crossed themselves on the forehead, the lips and the chest with their thumbs to show that Christ is on their mind. Then the priest started to bless the bread and wine, and every person got to drink and eat from them. Then the priest asked people to show a sign of peace by greeting people who are next to each other saying “Peace be with you.” At the end, the Priest blessed everyone and ended the Mass by telling people to go forth and spread the word, and the response was “Thanks be to God.” Music was played for most of the time during the mass. The songs played were in fact really pleasant to listen to and reassuring. The orchestra was behind the stage, so it was almost impossible for people to see them playing the music, and I think it is the way it is just to prevent any distraction to people. I was not actually sure that the songs were in English because I did not understand what the crowd was saying although I had the notes I was given when I entered the church.
I actually had a wonderful experience in the Catholic Church. Although I was so nervous and did not expect to be amazed by Christianity at all, there were several things that I really liked and wished that everyone even non-Christians considered to do as human beings. When the priest asked the people to show peace and great each other, everyone looked around him and started to hug the person next to him saying “peace

    First Time Went to Church

I decided to go to a Vietnamese Christian Fellowship at Fall Church. I went to the eleven o'clock service on Sunday. The whole church itself was pretty big. There is the main temple that has the regular service and then there is a whole other building that has separate classrooms where the English service is held and other Sunday school type classes are held. It was just the cross by itself. The scriptures that were read came from the bible. They provided me with a bible there so I could follow along with any of the passages that were read. There were no symbols on the bible. The title of the bible read, "The Holy Bible”. There weren't a lot of images during the service that caught my eye. The only one that I really noticed was the cross without Jesus on it. During the service there was a lot of prayer. When the service started it began with prayer, during the service there were moments of prayer, and the service ended with prayer. Something that I found very entertaining was the form of worship that they used which was singing. They sang a lot of different songs that worshiped God. You could tell who went to church a lot because they knew all the songs by heart. For those like me that didn't know the songs, the words were projected on to the wall so you could sing along with everyone else. There was also a live band that played the music to sing to. This part of the service was really entertaining to me and I really enjoyed it. The whole service was around an hour and forty-five minutes to two hours. After going to the Fellowship church I gained a new found respect for the Christian religion. It is not what I believe in but after going to the Fellowship service I saw what it is about and I feel that it is not wrong to believe in. If it makes people feel more comfortable in their life and gives them stability, then well for them. While I was there I didn't feel like I was doing anything bad. I actually felt as if I was just broadening my horizons and I just took it…

My partner and I went to Mass at the Christopher House on Campus Sunday April third. After reading my partner’s side of what was going on at church I understood a lot of what was going on. I realized that at this time of the year the Catholic religion are celebrating lent. This explains the purple cloak I described that the man, or as they call him “Father,” was wearing. During Lent the people of the Catholic religion are not to eat meat on Fridays until after Easter. This does not explain the purple but I have come to recognize it as just a color to represent the days of lint. I also realize now that the reason the gifts aren’t already up with the Father on the desk is because it is part of the religion’s communion.…

The Baptist worship observation was a totally new experience for me. It was the first time I was stepping out of my comfort zone and attending a service that was not my normal Sunday Mass celebration at my parish. At first, I was a bit worried because it didn’t know what to expect or how to act. However, the experience was gratifying. It was not a worship service that appeals to me; however, I consider that it can be a positive experience for someone searching for a more modern worship service. The community makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk-in, they give you information about their church and their services and are very enthusiastic about making sure they get the message across: they are glad you are there and you are welcome to come again soon. Also, they tell you that no one is perfect and that they want everyone to be welcome to experience the grace of God and His forgiveness in His Son Jesus. They give a very good presentation about their community and what it means to them, but in my personal experience, it lacks the solemnity other churches had.…

For my observation, I went to a usual Catholic Mass at a parish local to me. I analyzed the texts being used, the words being spoken, and the level of involvement of every member present. I focused on the responses of those in attendance during prayer and the homily, a scripturally-based reflection not consisting of doctrinal instruction, spoken by the priest. Additionally, I attended Eucharistic Adoration, a ritual where one sits in front of the consecrated bread, which is believed to be the true presence of Christ, contemplating the Mystery of Christ. I observed the people who entered and left and if the read Catholic literature or wrote.…

Firstly, the prayers were in Hebrew and they required the walking and bowing several times. There were no crosses, but instead there was a Star of David behind the alter and on some of the stain glass windows. There seemed to be more men than women, and all of the men wore small round hats, called a yamaca. The service was led by a rabbi, not a reverend like my church at home. The rabbi's name was Ari Goldberg. He wore a black suit with a white cloth draped over his shoulders for the ceremony. Also, Rabbi Goldberg did not move around as much and did not talk about personal life lessons.…

The service started by a hymn to praise the God of Abraham, followed by other prayers and songs. During the prayers and songs we had to stand up and sat only when the reverend told us to. A lady came up to the stand and read the story of Moses from the book of Exodus. At the end, a prayer was said. After, someone came up to the stand and lead a a sort of prayer, where they said a phrase and the…

People have elaborated our music into many different styles off of the few genres that they had. The main two were choral and instrumental. Choral music was more reserved for a church than for the court and composers would make many sacred songs, ballads, and madrigals for the church than for court or town music. Madrigals were most likely the most common during mass, a madrigal is vocal music composition traditionally two to eight voices but usually three to six. On the other hand, the style of music played at the higher classes when at a party was light, playful, fast, and happy. This music lightened the mood of the people and kept them content and dancing while also enjoying the music. There was a variety of instruments played to keep the party flowing and…

The time date and time I went to observe the religious service or observance is November 6th 2016 at 9:00am to 11am. The name of the site is St. Mary Gate of Heaven located on 103-12 101st Ave Ozone Park New York 11416. The outside of the building is very detailed and what looks like to me a cathedral style building very tall and big with five doors for entry. Outside had some sort of information board that told what was happening at certain times and dates. It also said information about the masses and displayed the hours of operation and phone number which I found very helpful. The outside had statues of Jesus. There is a cross on the of the building. Inside is very beautiful the statue of the Jesus was so huge that it needed anchors to hold…

The Primary section of the service consisted or an Opening song, Greetings and Announcements, an Opening Prayer, Gospel, another Prayer, and Communion. The whole process took about an hour and a half. During the Opening song the atmosphere felt tense, everyone was very serious and it was easy to see the dedication in the crowd. It made me feel very excluded because my faith is not the same. During the greetings and announcements the tension broke and it felt more inviting while the Priest explained things that were happening in the church over the next week. The greetings were followed by an opening prayer, and then a reading from the Gospel. The same atmosphere of tension and focus returned. It seemed as though everyone other than me was possessed by the words of the priest. At this point two individuals in white robes with lit candles and baskets on polls began Collection for charity and the church. Growing up I went to a very small Baptist church where we just passed around a small basket for collections, so this process seems very overdramatic to me. After collections they started Communion where we had the option of being blessed by the priest, drinking the juice representing Christ’s blood, and eating the wafer representing Christ’s body. I would have guessed from the previous atmosphere that everyone would want to be part of this but only a handful of people participated. Mostly Parents with young children.…

When I was in middle school, my family went through a period where we did not know if we would stay Catholic. We went to a couple of their church services, but my mother did not like them so we stopped going to them. Either way, I found all of them to be equally boring and unsatisfying spiritually. I was unable to tell the difference between their religion and my own. I did not understand why they would want to convert. I did not understand till I was…

The beginning of the service was called the Introductory Rites. This part of the service was very similar to the first phase of any other service I have attended. It began with the entrance of the priest and everyone was standing just like when a pastor comes into the pulpit in a Baptist church. I was not surprised by what I saw next; the congregation began to sing hymns and then there was a prayer. After the prayer the priest read from the Old Testament scripture of the bible.…

The word Mosque comes from the Arabic word masjid, meaning "temple" or "place of worship.". It is common for mosques to arrange daily prayer, as well as worship and celebration for other holidays. There are Friday prayers at mosques that woman are allowed to attend but never required. Christians are known to congregate to church on Sundays, and the Jews are known for Friday night and Saturday morning services, however the more religious Jews pray every single day, as well as the more religious people in Christianity and Islam. Muslims and Christians believe that their places of worship are sacred and holy, while the Jews do not tend to think of synagogues as sacred place. Mosques are a place of idol worship. Mosques often depict the prophet Muhammed, because he is considered holy. Christians similarly use Jesus on the cross as their form of idol worship, churches often display a cross with Jesus on it, while Jews do not have idol worship, they only pray and worship God. The architecture and layout of a mosque is specific for spiritual reasons. In many mosques, there is an open courtyard, called a sahn. Within the courtyard three is usually a fountain, its waters both a welcome respite in hot lands, and important for the ritual cleaning that is done before prayer. Another important part of a mosques architecture is a mihrab. A mihrab is a niche in the wall that indicates the direction of Mecca, where all Muslims pray…
