First Stone - Essay on Change

Change is the act of becoming different or evolving into something unique, either positively or negatively. In everyday life, change occurs through many different occasions when people feel the need to develop both physically and emotionally. In Don Aker’s “The First Stone” personal growth and change both physically and emotionally is a key theme that develops throughout the story with numerous characters. Specific characters that change both physically and emotionally are Reef, Diane and Leeza. Throughout the story Reef went through a series of difficult events which caused him to change. To begin with Reef has trouble looking past the death of his loved ones, and so he becomes more obnoxious and rude. Reef has a close relationship with his grandmother who has recently passed away, due to that incident Reef tended to be more rude and disrespectful towards anybody who came in his way. Teenagers or children who have to go through the loss of someone close to them tend to be destroyed emotionally; however they try to hide it physically by being rude to others. Secondly Reef became much weaker both physically, and emotionally when people took advantage of him and hurt him. His Grandfather was a druggie, and he used to abuse, and torture Reef a lot when he was a kid. People who have been abused in the past by drug addicts become very un-pleasant to be around, you can tell from their eyes that they are still scared yet they hide it by trying to look fierce, or making you feel scared. Thirdly Reef overcomes his depression by meeting someone who helped him feel happy again, and who is pretty much going through the same thing. When meeting, Leeza Reef had felt a lot more comfortable talking to her because she had to lose someone from cancer, she had taught him to become nicer, which had changed him from being a grumpy, and depressed soul to a happy-ish person. In conclusion by having to go through many terrible events Reef went from being a terrible rude and
